Likewise, I found too many of them sounding a bit too loud, beefed up and not much motion going on. They wouldn't sit well in a mix. But I also don't like any of bands people keep posting videos by to intimate sounds from either, so it's just my taste.
I will say that if there is one thing you're doing wrong, it's that you're trying to directly replicate sounds from recordings. Producers almost never record sounds with effects piled on, effects are usually added afterward during the mixing stage. Then there's the mastering process which completely bumps around the dynamics even more-so. There's also sequencing to consider. Trying to replicate most of this is asking for a headache, not to mention that when you get down to recording and mixing it, there's little you can do with it.
