RADIAS SERIOUS PROBLEM (again)!

Post by progg »

Hello! It's about Korg Radias.
The issue: when in edit menu, the pages changes randomly without pressing a knob. Also some values change. The tipical situation: arp page change to filter page (as i said without pressing the corresponing knob), but as i heard, it's a matter of time this jumping to spread across all of the pages. Your oppinion, please!
Thank you!

Kalin

p.s. Local Korg technician couldn't fix it, his explaination sucked and wouldn't be dealing with this idiot again. And meantime my warranty expired..Cheers!

Hello Kalin,
I think that you are going to have to find a different repair technician, because this isn't a problem that you're going to be able to fix yourself.

There are several good techs on this forum, perhaps one within reasonable shipping distance.

I'm just venturing a guess at what the problem is, but I believe that one or more potentiometers / encoders have broken solder connections where they mount to the circuit board's surface. This intermittent connection is randomly shifting your edit focus.

Another alternative would be to find someone that wants to buy a broken Radias and try to recover as much money out of it as you can.

I'm interested in what the previous tech had to say.
I used to play Korg instruments, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Yeah.

A temporary workaround (if you can get to it), is to turn off page jumping.
By default it is enabled, which means you can tweak a knob or button and the screen will jump to the relevant page.
As one of the knobs is faulty, it is sending off random changes of value so the page is changing to try to show it, just as if you had moved the knob yourself.

My radias used to do this. I took X-trades advice and turned on catch mode (in global)

I then replaced them with new knobs (i repair boards for a living.)

Thank you so much for your answers!
I sent the unit to another technician. So far the knobs are being reported as normally working. One guess is some solder problems in the filter pot (it always jumps on that section).
I'll keep you posted about this.
Best regards,

So sorry to report my unit is still jumping randomly...Not so sure i would like to continue this nightmare. Yes, it was about a malfunctioning potentiometer. After its replacement (and in my country - Bulgaria - it is a real pain to find a proper pot for Radias) the jumping appeared in other menu page. The technician resoldered all the pots and knobs inside and in a moment, when the synth was disassambled, the problem seemed to be gone. After assambling the jumping appeared again. Maybe under the influence of temperature change..but it sounds really ridiculous.
Furthermore i'm not sure if changing jump mode to catch will permanently solve this problem.
