Programming challenge: Roland JP8000 supersaw

Post by danielb »

Hi all,

As discussed, here is the Roland JP8000 supersaw challenge.

This is a recording I made some time ago for another forum. It features a very simple supersaw sound, and my attempt to replicate it on the Radias. It shows single notes, and chords on the JP and Radias.

However, I think the real challenge is to get as close as possible to this:

http://www.type34.info/temp/Supersaw%20 ... 0forum.wav

This is a much more elaborate patch, with a bigger supersaw and automation of the cutoff frequency, so you can hear how menacing it can sound with low cutoff.

The Roland sounds are made with a single oscillator and no external effects. The Radias sounds are NOT made with oscillator unison (that's a clue).

D.

you got decently close actually, but the filtering is off- and maybe some modulations and chorus should be added to richen it up a little bit. GOOD JOB THO- you should post the patch

Could you provide a simpler sample of the original Roland supersaw sound? preferably with the delay/reverb/cutoff automation etc.

Also your comparison isn't great because one is Wav and one is MP3. It would be really interesting to do a complete and proper comparison in order to replicate the sound fully...

We really need to hear identical things from both synths. If that's not too much effort?

X-trade- he got pretty close, its almost exact, but the playing isn't the same, as you have said.

also I think there is delay and possibly other effects on the Roland example. It'd be nice to hear the same notes and/or basic playing sequence on both synths with a raw patch.

OK. By popular request, here is another recording.

http://www.type34.info/temp/JP8000%20and%20Radias.wav

I have turned off all effects on both synths for this one. This makes it MUCH more difficult to get close.

On this recording there are:

- A few octaves and a couple of scales on the JP8000
- The same thing on the Radias
- Some notes played alternately on the JP8000 and Radias.

This is not the same Radias patch as on the first recording. When I turned the effects off it sounded less close than previously.

The JP8000 has a kind of hollow quality that I can't get on the Radias, or any other synth, for that matter.

I have both and will try the same.

Listening to them both on your recording I sense a "warmer" sound on the JP-8000 and a cleaner sound on the Radias.

So what I will do is remove all effects from both and do some scales and chords on Radias then on JP-8000.

I am also going to do the Supersaw variant on the SH-32 since I am curious as to whether the newer SH-32 has a more Radias like quality than the JP-8000.

Ahimsa,
Vlad

PS: Perhaps a stupid question but what role if any do you think the DACs play in terms of approximating the JP-8000 Supersaw in Radias?
Current gear: Kronos, Jupiter 80, Kurzweil PC3,Roland Fantom X8, Roland XV-88 (yep, its old, but the ACTION is heaven and those XV-3080 sounds are still wonderful for me), Radias-R, Motif ES (yeah it's older but I love the guitars ;) )

i made a really crazy supersaw bass sound, but the sound is essentially alot of wierd settings that make a sort of noise, combined with 2 eqs that also add to the noise- but make the sound listenable as well.

Idk but i think the way to get this sound on the r3 is to use EQs both filters all 3 egs and maybe a waveshaper/drive
