KORG M3 PADS AND RIBBON

why do i never really need to use the pads and the ribbon on the m3.although lots of people rave about them.am i missing something..
i play in a band and do a lot of sequencing.

I can't say about the ribbon controller.
My M3m doesn't have one. But as for the pads,
you're probably a pretty good player.

I'm not a great keyboard player but the pads to me
operate as an audition system for the Combis & KARMA.
They're not much use to me on individual program patches.

I never use pads for individual parts. That would not work for me.
I'll sometimes assign chords to pads though. When I do, it works
really well for recording & switching KARMA settings on the fly.

The way I use the pads: For real-time sequencing of drum parts, to trigger RPPRs as simple arpeggiator alternative, and to trigger chord changes in Karma. The idea of using the pads and SysEx messages in an RPPR is also really interesting to me, but I haven't gotten around to fiddling with it yet.

I'm not a big fan of ribbon controllers. I find them kind of fiddly. So the ribbon on my M3 doesn't see much use. But I'm glad its there because there will come a day when I'll need another real-time control and it'll be all that's left.

thanks for the replies..i wasnt saying that the pads and ribbon are bad,i just never feel the need to use them.maybe cos my last keyboard was a triton ( which didnt have pads ) i dont know....

i use the pads a LOT.
When i need in my band to trigger more than 4 notes chords (as in with my left hand) i use the pads to trigger chords i've saved and i play the melody with my right hand. that way i simulate a 3 hands setup.

Another situation where i use the pads, is to trigger real samples in sequencer mode using RPPR. i basically have this situation in all my songs, we're basically an alternative rock band, and i try to re create everything that the band can't create.

I believe that the pads are such an important part of my live setup, i believe that i'll get an M3M and leave it aside for when the one i have dies. Or i just hope that the successor of the Kronos will have physical pads(or i'll just have to get external pads and have a work around).

Another use of the pads is to learn the awesome chords that many of the pads have pre-programmed into them. And of course you can play elaborate chords with the pads and give your full attention to your right hand soloing.
