Sequencing the K with a DAW...

Post by blinkofanI »

Hi All,
Finally gave in and bought a K-73(yeah, yeah i said i wouldn't buy one but this thing just sounds fabulous!). I want to use it with Logic but i have just one problem: I'd like to use it in Combi mode instead of SEQ mode while sequencing with the computer, so i don't have to save my settings to disk before shutting down the beast. Only problem, the Kronos doesn't respond to volume messages sent from my Logic session. Well it does audio-wise(doing a fade-in in Logic, for example, will make the Kronos fade in on the channel) but not on the display.Volume faders don't move. Pan messages make the pan on the K moves.

If i move to SEQ mode, all is well but not in COMBI mode. Only difference i saw is the Status mode that has a BOTH option in SEQ mode. It's not there in COMBI mode.

Anybody has a solution for me? Thanks for your time!!

You don't mention if you are trying to record one of the onboard combis or setting up your own Timbre/channels?

You must remember that recording from Combi mode to daw, Kronos is transmitting the combi on 1 channel. (The Global ch 1)
So trying to use faders 2,3,4 etc. in Logic is not going to work.
You can add subsequent tracks to Logic by using the unused Timbre/channels of the combi.
Recording from combi mode to daw, I would recommend Local Off.

Recording from the Internal Seq. to daw is another story. I highly recommend going to the Karma Wiki page at KLF.
There are excellent tutorials there that will get you going..

http://karma-lab.wikidot.com/search:site/q/m3%20daw

Try this:
Pull up a Initialized combi, select a synth on channel 1 and piano on channel 2.
In Logic, add 2 External Instrument tracks. Now highlight the first track and play the synth. Highlight track 2 and play the piano..

That's wierd, as I'm doing the same thing - using Logic in Combi mode to sequence with Logic.

Mine responds fine to MIDI volume.....

It *sounds* like the issue is as Lou states.......

Try it and report back! :-)

Scooby, am I correct that you are also working from combi mode with Local Control on?
That would explain having fader control from logic.

Not with local on - I use Logic to route the sounds/channels

Okay, then I'm a little confused when you said that Kronos responds to fader midi volume? I actually thought you meant the faders move on Kronos when adjusting Logic.
So what you meant was that using a fader in Logic controls volume in K, but the K fader does not move, is that correct? Thanks.

Hi Lou and Scooby,
Thanks for replying. First, i need to be clear. The K responds to Volume messages in Combi mode but it doesn't show on the screen faders as it does for Pan messages. When i move the volume fader in Logic on a midi track, the fader on the K's screen doesn't move accordingly. If i move the Pan on the same Logic track, the Pan on the corresponding Midi channel on the K moves.

I'll try the External instrument plug-in in LP9. How i have always set up my things is this: I create 16 Instruments objects in the Environement. I assign each of them a MIDI channel from 1 to 16 and then create corresponding tracks in the Arrange page in Logic. I then create a blank Combi with some FX settings. I use that Combi as a template that i copy to a new location on the Korg synth when i start a new song. The K is of course on Local Off as i use it as controller and sound source. I have always prefered this setup opposed to creating a Multi-Instrum. object as i constanly program new sounds and would need to update the patch list constantly.

What i don't like about the Ext. Inst object is you can't program Program, Pan and Volume changes in your strip so i guess you have to put it in the first MIDI region of the track? Each Instrument object has its own settings for Program, Pan and Volume and Logic sends that while loading the song.

What i found weird is that my setup works perfectly well in SEQ mode where i use a Song number as a blank Combi. If i draw a fade-in in Logic on whatever track, the K's onscreen fader moves respectively. But not in Combi mode.

For now, this may be a work around for this..

If you go into Global/Midi/External and select Template #12, it has preassigned Volume and Pan.
For now don't save it, just select it and go back to combi mode and select "EXT on the control surface. You can now move sliders and pans on Kronos and Logic will respond.
The only thing I don't like here is that you have to FIRST physically select the track with your up down arrows for the fader to respond correctly.

You can now also record your fader and pan movements of Kronos sliders and knobs to a duplicate track..

Edit:
For all of the above to take place make sure in Logic, you select "Settings" above the Inspector and then Midi and check-highlight Sysex with Midi Thru Function

Hi Lou,
Thanks again for your time. But i think i didn't make myself clear(maybe because i'm french canadian). I don't want to use the Control surface of the Kronos. I just want the "virtual" faders on the synth's touch screen to follow my volume changes that i program in Logic(initial volume settings and automation afterwards during the song playback). The way it is now on my side, it works in SEQ mode(where i use it as a combi, nothing is recorded in the Kronos sequencer) but not in Combi mode.

If someone can confirm me that moving Logic's volume fader on a midi track doesn't make the volume fader of the corresponding channel on the Kronos display move as well while in COMBI mode in their rig, then i'll know it's not something wrongly set on my rig.

Thanks again for the time you take with me, Lou. That's much appreciated!!

Blink, sorry I wasn't on the same page with your post.
As far as the faders not responding while in combi mode, I for one can confirm the same here. Sorry I couldn't be of help..

Hi Lou,
Well, in a way, that's great news!! It confirms that my setup is ok. Now, why CC10(pan) is received by the Kronos and updated on the display panpot but not CC7(volume) is beyond me!! If Danatkorg follows this thread, maybe he can explain this to us. Like anything in the software world, i'll have to use a workaround, which is to use SEQ mode. But i'll have to save my IFX and MFX to disk as a .SNG file before shutting down the Kronos and reload it everytime i continue working on a song. Working in COMBI mode would be so much easier... maybe OS 1.5 will solve this.

Thanks again Lou and ScoobeDoo for your time on this.

If you find out anything on this, please post it. I'll be searching for it myself and will report back also.

I think the release of the editor will solve not having to save to disk, while saving within the Logic (DAW)
