Karma confusion (it's my age)

Post by runningman67 »

I'm enjoying the combinations, the karma is undoubtedly an awesome addition. I must admit though when i get brave and slide things up and down and press buttons I end up making a right mess. Does anybody know of a simple tutorial, on you tube or a website. Something basic. I'll be able to develop from there.
All those lights and sliders man! Help.

if you want to know more about programming KARMA, then you could look at the WIKI from KarmaLab.

http://karma-lab.wikidot.com/

There is lots of information available at that site. Although there isn't a section for the Kronos, you could start with the KARMA section and then check the M3 section or the OASYS section because the KARMA version is the same for the Kronos.

Check out the way to reset the values for the mixer, the scenes etc etc

Changing combis or programs without saving your 'mess' will restore them to there original settings.

So you can move sliders etc safe in the knowledge that those movements are not permanent.

First of all, make sure you are on the Control Surface view and the RT/Karma tab on the main screen before you begin adjusting Karma parameters in real time. Different programs/combis use different real time control assignments, so its not universally consistent which button/slider does which function. If you have it up on screen, you will get visual labeling of what function is assigned to what button or slider.

When I hear you say: "when i get brave and slide things up and down and press buttons I end up making a right mess", the first thought that comes to my mind is that you are adjusting some of the "timing" parameters, which is what most of us would associate with a "right mess". The very first slider tends to be a Rhythm Swing Percentage, or other beat/clock division. This slider is going to mess with the timing of your groove. Mostly, IMO, this is not a great adjustment for *real time* tweaking, unless you know exactly which polyrhythms you are seeking, and can be very accurate in making the adjustment to arrive at the exact beat division. I find that a lot of people I have talked to experience what they perceive as "KARMA mess" because of THIS parameter.

The other thing to remember about the real time KARMA parameters which are assigned to the sliders is that they are VERY sensitive. Each of the steps along the 128 gradients may result in a drastically different result. And, since these reside on faders, one has the desire and tendency to grab hold and slide (because that is a satisfying thing to do!), but alas in this case, minute and distinctly accurate changes tend to yield the most musical results. Try touching a parameter on the touchscreen then using inc/dec buttons to carefully tweak and adjust....it will likely work out much better for you in real time.
