EMX1 or EMX1SD
Hi all,
New to the forum here. About to purchase an EMX1, and wondering your thoughts on racking my brain looking for an SD. Is it worth the pain and extra money? I can't seem to find how much extra storage a 128MB Smart Media card actually gives you. Any opinions in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as I have a line on a few (not SD's).
Thanks,
nuggs

I would definitely say that the SD edition is not worth its money. You can back up your data with a sm card as well, the memory size is sufficent. SD cards are more compatible to modern pcs, but I think that does not matter. As I said, backing up works with the sm, and the internal memory of the emx is totally enough, it will not run out that soon.
I would definitely say the SD edition is VERY worth its money. Just for one reason. The power supply is digital, it weights almost nothing, and can be left connected and it won't heat up if the Electribe is not on.
If you use it a lot and travel with it, these are GREAT advantages.
Also, the SD edition has a standard power connector on the machine, unlike the old version that has a weird multipin connector. And it's no longer 12 V, now it's 9 V.

The SD version is worth it because you probably want to hold on to your electribe for a number of years. Smart media is already obsolete. While there is much stock of smart media to be had, the fact remains that you are buying old technology. If you go to the music store, they might sell some albums on 8-track tape for cheap but you might want to throw down an extra $5 to get a CD

I have the smart media version... good luck finding smart media cards for a reasonable price!!! I've never really considered using the smart-media for saving data (seeing as I don't even have one) but now that I have a mate who also has a smart media (and a SD) EMX it would be nice to be able to transfer patterns between machines. I think for the moment 256 patterns is enough for me. I would think that the power supply for the SD version is a bit more stable (12VDC vs 9VAC) sometimes the smallest bump on the multipin on the SM EMX causes a power dip that resets the machine.

It depends on the price. In general I would say the SM is going to give better value. There are always cheap SM cards on Ebay. In the unlikely event that you can fill the memory (something like six minutes mono) with samples you can't miss with and have a couple of hundred patterns you love to play then you will have plenty of space to save them on a single card anyway -as well as being a genius. If you are anything like me you will be constantly changing/ freshening them and dumping out the old ones before the internal memory is even full- for me it's part of the fun. Todays great sample turns into tomorrows dull lifeless an uninteresting noise- so out some go to be replaced with whatever I have picked up on my sample collector (a Zoom MRS 4). This way your Tribe will GRADUALLY BEGIN to properly fill. I would only consider the SD in your position if it were the only bit of gear you were intending to use. If you are intending getting more grooveboxes to add- the SM will definately suffice- and give you some money towards others. I'm guessing that you could afford a secondhand EA1 with the money you would save for example!! I know which queue I'd be joining.

I have an EMX Smart media and i can honestly say i have yet to wish i had an SD version...Hell iv had it a few years and have not maxed out its internal pattern slots yet, and only recently made a backup save. Even with a small capacity smart media card, thousands of patterns can be saved/loaded because the data is so tiny.
On the other hand, i do wish my ESX was the SD version... About 15 smart cards worth of samples on 1 cheap 2 gig SD card sounds very temtping!
So EMX SD....NO, ESX SD...YES!

True... There is no difference between devices.
There is no need to have SD in EMX. The SM card is enough.
If You plan to buy SX then You should consider buy SD version.

Apologies- I had it in my head that it was the ESX you were talking about- this makes it much easier though- just like the last posts are saying- you might even find you don't need a card at all. 256 is a LOT of patterns (how long do you think it will take you to write say 50 patterns you are REALLY happy with?)- it has to be the SM version & spend the change on something else. Have fun.
No matter MX-1 or MX-1 SD but in case of SX-1 definitely SX-1 SD!
