Hi,

Ive just bought a Korg R3, and am really exciting in learning to how to create patches for it. I bought it mainly for the vocoder, but also want to know how to use it as well.

Im a COMPLETE newbie with this kind of Synth, (owning already a Nord Electro 2 & Korg X50 [using presets only on the X50])

Im mainly a jazz/funk/groove player and would like to get upto speed how to create patches for my R3.

I thought id start with an old favourite of mine, Lets Groove by Earth, wind and fire.

Can someone give me some hints/tips on how to re-create the

-Intro vocoda robot voice (we can boogie down)
-Main Brass sound (since the preset one on the R3 arnt great)

I just need some kind of direction to get started?

Welcome inavran,

yes there is a download section if you go here http://www.korgforums.com and select downloads, then R3.

Other users have posted patches along this forum but maybe some links are not valid anymore.

If you are interested in vocoders (like me), then you may visit my page linked in my signature. There are some R3 patches as well as some hints to use vocoders.

Regarding the sound(s) you are requesting, we encourage you to try to analyze and get close to the sound you want by yourself. There are several ways to do this and there are a lot of posts about it and the internet has good tutorials about (generic) substractive synths.

What you would not find here is a section like "who is gonna make this patch/sound for me" until you find a user named Santa Claus.

My first recommendation for you is: Install the R3 Sound Editor on your PC/MAC. This will make things easy to change and you could visualize better your synths structure. Spend some time tweaking the parameters, so you will find out what effect they have and what they do. For example, find out waht characterics has every waveform and try to find out for what instrument class it could be suitable or viceversa.

If you get stuck or need hints, a lot of users here will be glad to help you, but the main effort has to be done by you, which also will allow you to get the best from your instrument.

the software editor is not that great, hands on control will be more pleasing to you, i garuntee it.

I had my hands on a few synths and have to admit in each case it was much easier to program with an editor than from the instrument panel and every time it was a way faster. Don't have R3 but if the editor is radias alike must be magnificient. so do not listen to the troll do not hesitate, just jump on it

and program.

I think that you are the less appropiate one to give such missplaced advices, being you the one who has posted the most "I want this sound" posts in this forum.

For understanding and learning how to program sounds, the editor ist the most valuable tool. After learning how to program, it is fine to try to perform with the onboard controls but that was not the question in this post.

Please stop posting your misplaced and incoherent advices who do no good to anybody Morshu. Until you don't learn to respect the advices and opinions of users with more experience than you (you don't have any) in this forum, you will never leave the mediocre level where you are in now!

Maybe this will sound hard to you but I think it is time someone says it. Maybe you like to be treated this way, maybe this is what you want here. In that case it is fine for me, then I think a lot of us will be glad to give you what you deserve.

Hey Axxim or Morshu ,need your input. Seems like you guys would know the answer to this one. Almost complete copying the Whole XL library to the R3. Took some time for myself to create patches from those. In working with the knobs I had the perfect sound I wanted. Is there any way to save what you have done with the physical knobs? Somehow send it to the Editor from what you have done on the keyboard itself? How can you get those exact settings again? Could not find it in the instructions.

depends on how you want to do it, usually i believe the physical knobs change it and it save the way you edit it... so i'm not sure what happenned to you.

When you make changes via the knobs, the settings are in a temporary edit buffer on the R3 and don't get saved unless you explicitly write the changes back to the program, and the WriteProtect has to be turned off in the Global settings to do that. The R3 only has the 4 assignable knobs, which only edit the current 4 parameter values set via the page selector knob. With the editor librarian software, you can see most of the parameters on one screen so that you can easily edit them. The editor also groups the parameters according to how they make sense, not divided into pages of a mere 4 parameters at a time.

Yet another reason why Morshu doesn't know Krap about how to edit the R3...
