Selective MIDI out

Hey folks,

I get the feeling I'm missing something quite basic here.

I've selected a combi and set all timbres to OFF, chosen channel 3 for every timbre. Global channel is 8.

My VSTi on my DAW is set to receive MIDI only from channel 12.

However, if i play my Tr keyboard, it still plays my VSTi.

What am I missing? I'm looking to have certain note ranges play my vst only and other ranges play the Tr, but nomatter what settings I choose every single note always plays the VSTi

Help would be much appreciated.

This is a puzzler...

It would appear that something is still transmitting in universal or global midi (all channels sent) or that something on your sequencer (receiving) is turning any incoming signal into an "all channels" message.

So that's where you look - methodically - from combi settings you know, track and channel settings - sending to external on channel #X (not off) - then checking your midi selections, preferences, and filter under the global section - then doing the same thing with the sequencer.

Eventually you'll find it and probably say "duh!", but other than this I have no suggestions. It looks like what you are doing is correct - just that there is a layer or menu off your radar just far enough so that it is frustratingly invisible.

That's the way it always is when learning a new section of capabilities.

If noting else works try going step by step from the manual and see if there's some step or page you've overlooked. When I do it (and I've definitely had my RTFM moments) there usually is something to be found.

The 'channel' setting in Cubase at least doesn't filter input, and quite often VSTi's still respond in 'omni' mode. You have to use a MIDI filter plugin on the channel to stop it from responding. Or use a VST host designed for live performance.

In my experience at least, the MIDI channel selection for a MIDI track in cubase just re-channelises everything coming into that track to that channel. I've had problems with double-note triggering when using EXT timbres in this way because the track was picking up the EXT channel and the Global channel off the TR and re-channelising both of them to one channel before sending them to the synth.

Don't know if you are using Cubase but that is what I found there.

Cheers folks,

You pretty much nailed my current situation.

I am trying to go live with VSTis and am trying to come up with the ideal setup, however as you correctly assumed this is the first time I'm trying it out.

I'm quite busy with work these days and to be honest I haven't been able to dedicate a lot of time to learn about MIDI filtering, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I'll hopefully come up with the solution soon.

And yes, I am using Cubase. I'm not planning to move away from Cubase unless things get really bad, mainly because I don't have enough time to explore. I think I'll look into the MIDI filter first.

In any case, can you recommend any host designed for live performance that you can say first hand is great?

h ha! problem solved. I downloaded an ultra light and simple midi filter plugin and the job is done. Can't wait to set up my live channels now!
