Live Performance- iPad Camera Connection Kit?

Post by RachelP »

I'm creating drum tracks for live performance and the Korg website says to get the iPad Camera Connection Kit.

Is there an adapter that can convert it to a quarter inch?
What will sound best?

Thanks for your help!

If you don't mind spending $200, the Alesis iO Dock puts all the inputs & outputs together in one device.
It has two 1/4" outputs, two XLR / 1/4" inputs, MIDI in, MIDI out, USB MIDI, a 1/4" footswitch input, and a 1/4" headphone output:

Alternatively, the Apple Camera Connection Kit ($30) will get you a USB port for MIDI, and the Apple Composite AV Cable ($40) will send audio out to 2 RCA jacks (which you can convert to 1/4" using an adaptor).
You can't use both of them at the same time, though -- they both plug into the dock connector port on the iPad.

I did see the iO dock.
Boy, is that neat!
If I do the $70 setup will the sound quality be as good as the $200 iO dock sound?

hey rachel,
as hazabikit pointed out, both the camera connecting kit and av cable require the dock connection port, so you cant use both!!

why not invest in the alesis io? if its for live work, then it'll provide you with the right balanced connections to hook up to a PA or amp, as well as being a stable work station for stage or studio! also, it gives you scope for expansion! reading the description, you can hook up and control other midi hardware, and it provides a usb port to connect your laptop!! by all accounts, it's all singing all dancing.......

hope this helps,

I'll jump in. Alesis IO? I was ready to pull the switch and pick one up. Am tired of fiddling with the camera connection kit, midi mess, etc and was ready to buy. Since the latest iOS release however, there have been nothing but complaints on the Alesis site, and elsewhere about hiss, and other issues. Alesis seems to be pointing the finger at Apple, and hasn't been too responsive to complaints yet. It's put me off from buying one. I am going to wait, and see how they resolve the problems that have been raised.

Yes, the sound quality is the same. If all you want to do is get audio or MIDI out of the iPad, the Apple cables will do just fine.

You guys have given lots of good advice.

I'm going to wait and see if I make enough money gigging this weekend to buy a cool setup like the Alesis IO. I found an adapter for now...it runs the headphone jack into a quarter inch. It was just laying around my house. Score!
Eventually I'll have everything I need.

This is my first venture into live electronic sounds and I'm having such a good time with the Korg iMS20 app.

Does anyone know how to delete the synth track?
I can't find the button for that anywhere.
I'll just try recording over it, I suppose.
