So, now that I have Razor I have been attempting to recreate that Flux Pavillion 'bass' that has so much high end it's not even a bass.
I'm having trouble! D:
What I've tried is a lot of stuff with different formant settings, both with Razor's oscillator formant as well as the formant filter. I've added in filters such as lowpass phase, a phaser in the high end and a comb peak filter for extra distortion. Everything is passed through Razor's dirty limiter at 100% drive and dirt.
The combination I've gotten best so far is a pulse/saw hybrid osc at C2, with a formant oscillator at a ratio of 6 above it (3 octaves). I use pitch tracking to modulate that oscillators formant, which solves an issue I had with my R3's VPM (on the R3 certain notes would be cutting and others muted, pitch tracking the formant offset fixes this) I then pass everything through a vowel filter set to an 'A' tone, again with the formant offset pitch tracked. A unisono noise effect gives the patch the airy sound found in the songs. Razor's 'Safe Bass' feature adds the sub back in, though in their remix of Cracks it's obvious that the sub is a separate patch.
The thing is, I can never seem to get the right harmonics present to emulate the Flux patch! I've tried nearly every formant preset (of which there are many), sweeping through different formant offsets... and I can't get it!
Any ideas on how I could go about this?
Here's the sound in case you're unfamiliar:

The key is using strange cross mod and VPM and or FM combinations with a saw and square or saw and sine(possibly with ring)
If you want to contain the bass within the sound, you'll need to make sure they clash in a particular manner, which is the key to flux pavillion's sound. it is a pain to replicate. Also, don't forget to add tube distortion, comb filtering and normal distortion sparingly to fatten the sound.
There is a sub oscillator in there too.(probably a sine)
I think you might have an easier time replicating it on the Korg R3 or in Massive than anywhere else.
I think someone should revive this topic, because it would be nice if someone had a fairly exact formula to follow.
