I'd dearly love to be rid of binders full of pages for song lyrics. I know, learn the words to the songs. Well yeah, but . . .
Anyway, apart from that, if I were to buy a tablet, whether it be an iPad or some Android device, would there be a way to select songs from custom lists in Songbook to bring up the correct lyric page on the tablet, i.e. linked to the Pa1Xpro? And which tablet do you think would do the job for least $$ outlay (I'm talking a 10" screen jobby).
Maybe there's some of you guys out there already doing this.
Thanks.

Hi Giner,
You actually do it the other way around...You create your mini midi control data file, which transmits to the PA the code to select any one of up top 9,999 Songbook entries.
You just need a chart reading app for the ipad that does this.. I would STRONGLY recommend an app called Unrealbook which does exactly this.
There are a LOT of chart reading apps, but very few that will allow the linking of a midi file...Many will allow the linking of an MP3 audio backing track, but that does not do the job.
Cheers
Dennis
PS: there is even a very small PC app that creates the data midi with the correct codes for you
all you enter is the Songbook listing number.
It's free too!!

Wow! That was quick, Dennis.
So, you're saying an iPad expressly, rather than a less expensive Android tablet? Am I wrong in thinking this Unrealbook app is available for an Android tablet?
When you say, "the linking of a midifile", do I take it you mean the actual songbook entry, not a SMF specifically? I'm all style-play, no midi backings.
And about the small PC app. Can you tell me the name of it, please? It would run on an Android, right?
I don't have a tablet yet, just trying to narrow down my choices.
Sorry for the bunch of questions, there.
Thanks again, Dennis. Much appreciated.

Hi Giner,
Just wondering why you don't like the inbuilt text/songbook approach. You can link any text file in Songbook mode (Book Edit2, Browse for your file). Is the Pa1x screen too small for you? I use the Songbook to bring up lyrics for both Styles and midi files and find the Pa1x screen works just fine for me. You can assign Text Page Down to an assignable switch or pedal for Style mode. I tend to have chords and lyrics together.

Hi John,
Good thoughts there, John. I do use the songbook for our gig sets but you hit the nail on the head with screen size. The screen on board is a bit small for me, and I'd like something bigger and brighter. You young guys don't have to worry about that sort of thing, I know.
The other disadvantage with using the onboard screen would be that I'd be looking down at too steep an angle and all the audience would see would be the top of my head (good looking as it is
). With a tablet I'd be able to keep much better eye contact with the audience - an important consideration.
Cheers, Giner

Not to mention if you want a chart with dots...it aint gonna happen on a text based viewer!!!
With the apps on the iPad you view full PDF's...these can be as simple as the old Chordpro format you are indicating, or 5 page and upward full music charts!!
In my case I play quite a few jazz tunes, and quite a few "off the cuff" requests...Having the entire fake book libraries at my disposal means I can have access to pretty much any thing almost immediately!!
I only use the MIDI routine I described above for those songs I have "setup" on the PA and stored as Song book listings...But the HUGE advantage of the iPAd or indeed alternative tablets, is the vast flexibility it gives a performer!
Giner, Unrealbook is ONLY available for the iPad...I am sad to say there are scant few chart readeing apps for the Android OS as yet..There are some, but they are poor imitations of those available for the iPad.
I have used the Korg text based system in the past, but it was so buggy, and so SOOOO restrictive and not so intuitive to use live, that I actually went back to physical chart cards (lyrics and chords)...that was until I discovered the iPad and Unrealbook...there are plenty more for the iPad....Unrealbook just happens to do the msot for the performer in one package!!
Dennis
PS: and you can also do your emails and pop into forums in set breaks
as well as have it play all you break music, perhaps watch a movie, or even download LIVE, a brand new chart you don't have, but get asked to play!! Takes about 20 seconds (as long as the venue has a wi-fi hotspot, or you have a 3g version)
