Has anyone picked up one of these little yellow boxes of fun yet?

Jingles,

I was suggesting if you could post a video on the tube...sorry I wasn't clear. I'd like to finally see a proper video instead of all these crappy demos.

new kaossilator 2

Post by zevexred »

Hi there, I am new to this forum but have some experience with Korg music gear and thought I would share my opinion of the new Kaossilator 2. Bought just two days ago, firstly the batteries supplied lasted less than 10 minutes, got new ones so got it working for about half hour before it decided to automatically scroll through menu several times, crash, switch on off by it's self and when battery life did eventually give up, tried some more new batteries and now doesn't work at all! Whilst it was operational the little time I did spend with it I felt some of the new extras were an improvement... drums, mic input, mini sd card use and two separate recording loops but no undo, smaller touch pad and the stupid little built in speaker that on some of the sounds just couldn't cope. Also what seems to be a name change on some programs that were originally on the first model just didn't sound as good even when amplified. I do like the look and feel of the new Kassoilator 2 but when or if I can get a refund? I'm gonna get the mkI Kaossilator, it works better for me.

One thing that I think is an improvement over the KO1 and the KPRo - if you change the tempo after having recorded some loops, the pitch of the loops remains the same, unlike the KPro where the loops change pitch, or the KO1 where you end up with a silent gap.
You can get some interesting 'effects' by recording / overdubbing onto a loop at a very high tempo, and then slowing it down to a reasonable bpm - particularly for externally recorded vocal loops.

Can anyone else comment on the KO2 - particularly with regard to sound quality?
(I was anticipating a step up in sound quality - not down.)

In my opinion the sound quality on the KO2 is better than on the KO1, but that's only my opinion.

I have not experienced any of the problems that zevexred mentioned.

My starter batteries gave me about 3 hours of use, there were no menu problems, no crashes, no self-switching off. The touchpad is smaller because the unit is smaller and handier, and the touchpad sensitivity is a vast improvement on the original.

The little speaker is tinny, but what do you expect from such a small unit.

In the end you have to try one for yourself. You can't rely on the opinions of others, including mine.

I have KO and KO2, and miniKP and KP2. Following comments apply to all of them...

On the plus side, there are a few new sounds that sound good.

On the minus side, I am not very convinced the KO2 is a step forward, although my hopes were set high.
  1. one of the first missing features I noticed was the absence of UNDO (cancel on the KO). Add on top of that the possibility to save phrases, but you cannot delete them... (Unless you do this indirectly, via PC - but the UM says "Do not use your computer to edit the files inside the RECORD folder" - I can understand that the internal format of those files should not be messed with, but I'm not even sure if the KO2 correctly handles deleted files)
  2. the speaker is almost useless (at least to me). it is a waste of hardware (and internal software complexity)
  3. the user interface has MANY quirks and issues to solve/improve.
  4. the yellow shell looks like a fresh idea, but is fragile: I dropped mu KO2 once, which broke the tooth at the bottom that are supposed to keep the shell locked to the synth. and I already lost one of those rubber pads. It is waste of resources because a simple battery cover works FINE.
  5. I even observed shutdowns following a drop. Now I'm not dropping the KO2 intentionally, but a fall of 1m/3ft should be survivable. Maybe the battery terminals are easily disconnected when subject to shock, not sure.
  6. I need a better way to protect the front of the synth, because it looks far more fragile than the KO. I hope a case will become available (in Europe, yet another toothache)
  7. the user manual does not tell what type of AC adapter must be used (I guess it is the same as the KO? didn't try.)
  8. the buttons are a bit difficult to manipulate: for example, the MIC button is opposite to the other buttons, so one has to be careful not to press both at the same time if not desired.
  9. some chords are easily overwhelmed by patterns
  10. for some reason, the WAV format is nonstandard: EAC cannot process it.
I have a definite feeling that this is an immature product (especially when compared to the KO), more of an expensive toy than anything else. I'm trying to reach Korg to give feedback, hoping they will improve the KO2 now that it has a software update feature, but they don't seem reachable or willing to.

Every kaossilator has this problem. Some programs are louder than others. Some ppl have suggested to use a compressor to help quell the loudness differences. Obv iously, though, a mixer akin to the one on kp3 would really help.

Kaossilator 2

Post by zevexred »

Well... decided to open up my new faulty KO2. Glad I did. What I found to my main problem was that the ridiculously tiny tactile switch that controls power on/off had come loose from the board (How long before the others do?) On closer inspection build quality looked rushed with little care taken on exact positioning of cheap components! IMO Complete trash, do yourself a favour, save ya dosh and don't waste it on this expensive toy! Read the reviews on here, nuff said!

Korg Kaossillator 2report

Post by djfacile »

I have some real complaints and request to korg about the new Kaosiilator 2 and hope and Pray for a very soon coming update from them! otherwise i will resale it!
-Why no more Undo Function? One wrong recording and you have to delay the all entire Pattern( This is really not good, even the first kaossilator had a undo Funktion ,and not having it make me nearly regretting having bought that Gear!!!!!
-Why 8 beat maximal only? 16 should be a minimum!!
-why only 150 Sounds? the memory is no more a probleme!
so many bass! so less synth sounds and so less Beat choice!!
Please do fast update, too many people I know won t buy it because of those lack of fonctionnality!

For those out there who are more interrested by a looper
look at the Korg SR1!! It is better,it is cheaper!!!
I mean on the Korg SR1 They put so many effects! Unlimited time recording (up to tree hours with loop Fonction recording from point A to B. and recording on the fly as your loop goes and goes ,each sounds recording is automazically recorded in a files,so at the end of your cession if you did recor 100 sounds, you will have 100 files, that you even can remanage in your daw!!! ,Unlimited Redo and the Touchscreen is nice readable compare to the Kaossilator micro Screen!!
You can charge your own beats and start your recording with it! and ad loops over and over and over und Redo anytime
And big bonus there is a nice freeware with it to import export and manage your Files , Bonus are 50 ready kits with 4 variation (Total 200) 100 E guitars Amp ,so you can use it as Guitar effect ! even A tuner is in and the SR1 is even cheaper that the Kaossilator 2-
I bought it,It s heaven and make the Kaossilator ridiculous in Terms of looping and recordings!
Please at least a update for undo Function! and some more sounds!!!
and 16 beat in state of 8 (way too short!!!)
I also don t like the fact you can not change the level of your samples! so if one is loader than other ,it turn to a Mess!!!
Please do some Update ,for this price range I expect a couple of Update!!
Thank you ,if you Agree with me ,please leave some topics here!! Korg must listen to us!!!The Customers!!!!
