"Closer" - help with legato, notes and envelope

Post by tpantano »

Hello there!

I'm seeking to cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Closer", sticking true to the original before diving into my own style.

While I've got a satisfactory version of the intro percussion running, making a patch for the synth bass isn't working well for me. It appears at 0:22 –

The core of where the sound comes from seems obvious- it's some sort of fuzz-wah, or alternatively, a low-pass filter with high resonance and slight drive, modulated.

I have two problems: The first is getting the filter modulation down right. I'm working with a legato mono setting (I believe it's Mono 1?) where overlapping notes won't retrigger the filter. The problem now is, figuring out what my EG1 settings need to be to modulate the LPF properly- and I can't seem to figure it out. Any ideas?

One thing I am doing is keytracking the filter for more muted bass notes, as the sound jumps octaves a lot. Which brings me to my second problem–

I can't, for the life of me, figure out the proper notes. The filteration and resonance combined with any slurred/portamento-y notes is messing with my head to the point that I can't seem to figure out what to sequence. I've got a working pattern, but... It's definitely not the same notes as the original. To figure them out, I try working with a plain old saw init patch, but I can't seem to match the pitches. Any suggestions for here as well?

Thanks!

Just as a general bit of advice;
Get "Transcribe!", by www.seventhstring.com
It's a very simple and cheap bit of software specifically designed to help you analyze music. It can do note guesses and slow-downs (that still sound good) and loops and the like. Also has a band-isolator type EQ that lets you focus on the bass or any other register you'd like.

If you're thinking most of those features could be accomplished in other software, you'd be right, but I have all those packages too and still use Transcribe to learn/figure out songs because it's just so much more intuitive and quick to use for that specific purpose. Highly recommended!

You can try it for free for a month, btw. The official version is (I think) 50 dollars and the guy is really relaxed about upgrades and new versions.
