Can the EMX imitate the Monotribe?

I hope it can- I am also hoping you will tell me how to do it. Close would be super. Nearly would be great. Roughly would be fine. Not really would resemble my own efforts. Many thanks!

More specifically? EMX generally kicks Monotribe's ass around the room. You don't have that option of rearranging the sequencer steps but I think aside from that the EMX wins hands-down.

Ah yes.... I meant can it imitate the actual sound of the Monotribe (not it's features)- what is the best way to acheive this... I've tried getting my saw out already.

Take a good look at the Monotribe's front panel, you'll be able to see in a minute all the synthesis options on the 'tribe giving you a good idea of it's architecture; now look at the Electribe and you'll soon notice that you pretty much have all the synthesis options the Mono has to offer and then some. Just stick to using the single waveform oscillator.

Thanks- like I suspected- the answer then is no- you cannot get the EMX to sound like/ imitate a Monotribe.

I have got my emx to make pretty good monotron,303 and sh101 tones in the past.

I was able to knock up all the tones with an emx in about half hour. Not perfect no, but with a little more time and i would say that the emx is very capable of emulating the monotribe 'sound'

The filters don't have quite as much squeal, but you should be able to get it close enough to be indistinguishable to a crowd of non-synthnerds. I dunno what synth option you'd use or anything because 1) I'm not in front of my EMX, and 2) I don't own a monotribe, but I'm sure you could sit in front of it for hours with all the options and find something that works.

Thanks folks. I watched the vid. I have tried for hours- I just cant make it happen. I may have to buy one-.. butit has no midi/pattern saves etc

there's also the analog vs digital issue that makes the monotribe stand out (but only in its corner).

there is MIDI for the monotribe, search for "miditribe I/O" (from Amazing Machines).

Hi- thanks for the reply- but I can categorically say now that the EMX cannot imitate the Monotribe- it can't even get close. I have just recieved one today and I have been completely stunned- it is well above my expectations- I have been getting sounds out of it that the EMX could only dream of ( I have been playing the EMX for years now). In fact I am just about to buy another Monotribe to sync up. I am rapidly losing intrest in my EMX as a result. Cheers

hehe, that's pretty cool your enjoying your monotribe, but make no mistake, the EMX is a MUCH more powerful and capable synthesizer; think of it this way, do you think the monotribe will ever be able to create the sounds the EMX is capable of with its different synth engines, modulations capabilities and percussion sounds (and the ability to tweak them, I mean the drums on the mono... are almost useless)?... Not to mention it's pattern based sequencer and MIDI capabilities, etc... (the list is just much too long). I consider the filter on the EMX, as digital as it is, one of it's strongest points (Korg nailed it there) with a pretty snappy envelope to boost; so when it really comes down to it, you'll be using and digging into your EMX again sooner than you think

... It's much too powerful to even begin to compare it to the mono... It's pretty cool, don't get me wrong, and you'll be using it a lot too... depending on whether you really dig it or if it's just a honeymoon

I highly recommend adding midi to the Monotribe and connecting it to your EMX. I installed the one from Amazing Machines in about 10 minutes.

Just connect the midi out of the emx into the monotribe (miditribe?) and it syncs perfectly. The default midi out channels are:

Drum Part 1 = Monotribe Kick
Drum Part 3 = Monotribe Snare
Drum Part 6a = Monotribe Hi-Hat
Synth Part 1 = Monotribe Synth

Clear all the parts on the monotribe first (Gate Time + 1 if you have installed V2) and just press play on the EMX. Now, instead of 8 steps you have 128

Yes the EMX has much more features and has full sequencing and midi capabilities- in most of these departments it beats the Monotribe. But the Monotribe sounds better... much better than the EMX.. and is instantly gratifying. I won't be using the drums on the Monotribe- my ESX will take care of that. I am going to add the midisync adaptor- sold on Ebay. If I had to choose between two monotribes or an EMX- the Monotribes would win every time. Cheers
