R3 Aftertouch (let me see if I understand this...)

Post by thehighesttree »

I've come across a pretty cool expression pedal that uses a photocell instead of a physical foot-pot(?) to affect the variable, which got me thinking about how I could integrate this into my gear. Skimming through the expression pedal section of the R3 manual, it says one of the variables you can assign to the exp. pedal is "Aftertouch".

Does this mean the synth engine supports aftertouch but the keys themselves don't? Is aftertouch a discrete variable (kind of like portamento) or is it assignable to anything?

Aftertouch is supported, yes. It doesn't 'do anything' by default. You'd have to patch it with Virtual Patch or DMod (in FX) for your specific program.

On the Radias, this is achieved by assigning Aftertouch to one of the MIDI sources. By default it is already assigned to MIDI5.
in your case, I'd suggest you leave foot pedal assigned to foot pedal, and route foot pedal (which AFAIK is already an available source in V.Patch).

Of course, these kind of small details tend to be different between models - so anything beyond my 1st paragraph might not apply exactly the same to the R3 or at all.

It's pretty similar on the R3.

It has MIDI1, MIDI2 & MIDI3 patch sources.
MIDI1 defaults to #016 (General Purpose Controller)
MIDI2 defaults to #002 (Breath Controller)
MIDI3 defaults to Aftertouch

(There doesn't seem to be a footswitch virtual patch source)

Plug in a Korg expression pedal and assign it to aftertouch. Just tried it :)
Of course then you lose the ability to use Expression.

What? I always thought VSE just magically made the reviews themselves. I saw that the R3 was up a few days ago, great work!

...I always wonder when they're going to put the spectralis on there... Now I get to wonder who's going to put it up too.

I had a Korg 01/wfd that had aftertouch that I used in the radias... it was neat, but honestly, I just never used it. But that's probably because it was really hard to press down enough to get aftertouch to work and I didn't see the need to use it over other ways of modulating the sound. A photocell response sounds pretty neat, but seems like it could very easily produce artifacts given dynamic lighting, unless it's like the roland sp-404 (I think it was that) that had that modulator where you move your hand all around to modify the sound...

You can do it if you want. You can apply for writing a review for them after you read the rules and register for it. Once your submission is accepted you submit your review and then they accept or refuse it. If accepted, they check and maybe correct/change it to meet their redactional style and publish it. I did the review for the Roland VP-770.

I was wondering why that one was so poorly written :P

It was a really well written article! Very indepth!

It is interesting though, I've noticed sometimes a huge discrepancy between VSE ratings and people's ratings... that must be the reason for that.

Anyway, back to the thread...

I just realized, however, what I was talking about in my last post... it was the D-beam. That's what I was trying to think of for modulation.

Yeah I don't think it would be a very consistant mod source, but it would be a neat gimmick. My setup looks like some kind of alien command console anyways so I don't know if it's the best idea with all that light pollution.
