Sounds from Oxygene part 2

Post by Niblit »

There is one sound I've wanted to emulate for many years and it is one of the main background sounds in JMJ Oxygene Pt2.

At around 40 seconds into the track, is this variable speed triggering zappy sound that hits a peak and then breaks away with a pulsing echo.

(well that's how I describe it)

It then continues throughout the track at various levels and I JUST GOTTA HAVE IT !!!! Err sorry.

Is this possible on the mighty K or am I asking toooooo much.

Come on QR get ya programming head back on.

it's not that hard to program, it's a sine wave that has portamento and and the speed of the LFO is attached to the joystick.

actually, i've created such a preset for the M3 (in the radias EXB soundset if i recall correctly).'

maybe it's a good idea that people try to recreate this theirselves as a learning experience?

I created a program for the MS20 EX on OASYS that does just that ( I needed it for a job last year).

Give me a day or so to dig it out and I'll post it. It uses that fact that the MS20 Filters self resonate; with no Oscillator in use and the Cutoff frequency modulated using a Ramp Wave from the MG and with the MG depth and speed assigned to two controller knobs; with the output fed into a DDL. Works beautifully.

As said - give me a day or two and I'll upload the program to my web site and place the URL to it on this thread. I'm not at my OASYS at the moment and up to my proverbial tonsils in work today, but promise to get to it in the next day or so.

Thanks for the reply friends. I'll have a go at recreating it myself.. That sound is basically what caught my attention when I first listened to JMJ. I think that's where his talent lies; the ability to make an (otherwise dull) tune fantastic by introducing random noises and sounds to make it sparkle.

I watched some video of him last night and he sure knows how to put on a show. All that over dramatic tuning and button pressing to make it look more interesting that simply pressing PLAY on the sequencer.

But after all I write, he is bloody good at it and a lot richer than me.
Good on him, he DOES what I dream about doing...

it's a great example to try for yourself, if you need any help with things just ask.

the sound is going to be supplied by Kevin Nolan so than you can compare the things he's doing and your approach at that sound :)

Maybe we can create sound designing workshops beginning with a poll so we can vote from a group of interesting sounds and then we program the sound by using different engines/approaches so everyone can compare and learn

Well I TRIED to recreate that sound and NEARRRRLY got there. But its getting late, my brain is fried, my girlfriend has packed her bags, the neighbours have filed a complaint and their dog just started howling at the full moon...

May need to use headphones in future

hehehe,

great that you nearly there! It's always wise to take a break and listen to the program you created the next day with fresh ears.

When your done would you be so kind to post your program so we can see how you did it?

I'm also really curious about the attempt of Kevin Nolan, i didn't think of it but using the selfoscillating feature of the MS-20 is a great way to create those kind of effect.

That's what i love about this forum, everyday you learn something about how things can be done in several ways :) (ranging from musical creations of people till programming ideas)

Start with an initialised program (HD-1)
(the following is a list of changes to the initialised program)

OSC1 BASIC tab.
Set the first sample to, 01086:saw

OSC1 PITCH tab
LFO1/2, set LFO1 intensity to +12

PITCH EG tab
set figures for envelope level to -60 +99 00 +50
set figures for envelope time to 85 55 00 44

FILTER tab
Set the Filter1 routing to single
Set Filter A, type to low Pass and set the frequency to 39
Set the Input trim 99 (whatever that does)
Set Ams to pitch eg and the intensity to -30

FILTER1, LFO Mod tab
Set LFO 1, (intensity to A) to 99

FILTER EG tab
Set figures for envelope level to +05, +99, 00, 00, 00
Set figures for envelope Time to 69, 70, 70, 70

Amp1 EG tab
Set figures for envelope level to 00, 99, 37, 26
Set figures for envelope Time to 63, 86, 40, 81

LFO tab, OSC1 (sub tab)
Set LFO1, waveform to Saw and the frequency to 50
Frequency modulation, AMS1=Pitch EG, intensity= -99
then add a bit of OVerb for effect.

NOT PERFECT, BUT IT'S A START

Hello Niblit

Here is my approach to program the sound. It's not perfect but it I think it comes close. Realtime control is important for this sound.

PROGRAM BASIC
select mono and mono legato

OSC1 BASIC tab.
Set the first sample to 1146:sine

OSC1 PITCH tab
set LFO1 and LFO2 intensity to +12
(using both lfo's give you double range)

set AMS LFO1 and AMS2 LFO2 to cc#17, knob 5
intensity +12
(this lets you control the range)

set portamento to enable
set time to 76

AMP/EQ
set time release to 53

LFO
Use the same settings for LFO1 and 2

Waveform: Saw
Frequency: 68
AMS 1: cc#18, knob 6
Intensity: 99

Use a single delay,
delaytime around 485
Feedback +46
wet/dry around 25:75

Put control assign to RT knobs/karma
Knob 5 controls the LFO range
Knob 6 controls the LFO speed
