Need Speakers For My Kronos

Post by latnjazfan »

I have been learning how to play on my Kronos for about a year now.

To reduce any hassle from my wife, I have always used headsets. (Even then, she says the keys are loud, and can be heard around the house, especially when I'm banging away on some old time rock and roll tune, or montuno)

I now would like to play my Kronos outside the home, joining in a small combo or playing for small groups at the hospital. So I'm looking for 2 portable speakers that will fit in my trunk along with my Kronos 73.

I have tested several speaker sets at Guitar Center. Nothing I have tried come close in presenting the incredible sounds of my Kronos on earphones.

I don't need a lot of volume but I must insist on a high quality representation of my Kronos sounds.

Any thoughts or advice or recommendations:?:
Love my Kronos 73. Got it October 2011. March 2016 bought SpaceStation v.3 and Behringer Sub-Woofer.

Studio monitors are not much use for playing live though!

You could go for decent powered speakers (e.g. RCF, the cheapest they make are the 310As which are nice, but their bigger ones are better) or perhaps a really compact PA system such as the HK Elements series. The latter will give you a much more evenly spread frequency spectrum but it's really expensive.

If you can find a pair of these they won't let you down. I bought them with a Triton in 2003 and they still sound great.

I have a stereo pair for the rare instance I need amplification at a gig. I mainly just run through the house though if possible. 2 less trips to the van this way.

I use JBL EON510s and, for smaller gigs / rehearsals, Behringer B208Ds...the JBLs are louder and sound better (and are more expensive), but the Behringers are almost as loud, even smaller (14 lbs. each), sound almost as good, and are a lot cheaper...Behringer seems to invite negative comments in online forums, but I've never had a problem with any of their gear...there are lots of good small powered PA speakers available these days, from Yamaha, QSC, and others, and probably most any of these would do the job...two PA speakers will give you better quality full-range sound and let you run stereo (important for KRONOS pianos, organ Leslie simulation, etc.)...

I like to use various string bass selections when I'm using Combi 001. Do you think these speakers can handle the low frequencies? Have you encountered distortion?

It just depends on how loud you need to play - I've never encountered distortion with either the JBLs or Behringers, but I play mostly small-group jazz in small venues (coffee houses, restaurants) so never have to really crank them up (although I have used the JBLS on outdoor gigs without any problem, and they do play pretty loud if necessary)...I usually end up turning the bass down with both, though, they seem to be pretty efficient at low frequencies...it's amazing how much bass the little Behringers put out for their size, the bass player even plugs into them at rehearsal (they're used as the PA as well)...

$3000 for a pair, plus size and weight limits -- Any Ideas??

Post by latnjazfan »

SanderXpander wrote:How much are you willing to spend?
I'd like to pay no more than around $3000 for the pair.

Aside from the cost, my wish list would be for 2 speakers (stereo effect for Leslies, etc.), light weight (20+ lbs ea) and small (12"x24"), portable with a durable case; little distortion when playing acoustic string bass, and an accurate - realistic - reproduction of the sounds of my Kronos. Further, I'm not looking for high volume - just a faithful amplification of the potentials sounds of the instrument - especially pianos - for solo use and in a small combo.

Can you recommend speakers that would reasonably meet this spec??

$3000 will buy you a pair of just about any powered speaker made - the JBL EON510 will provide what you need for about $1300/pair, the Behringer Eurolive B208D will probably be good enough for about $400/pair, and the current fave QSC K8 / K10 are probably way more than you need at around $1500/pair...

dfahrner - How about the JBL EON 515XT ? QSC K10?

Post by latnjazfan »

Newer? Any better than the 510?

Do you prefer the QSCK10 over EON 515XT?

Thanks again for your opinion.
