Strategy by editing Programs on Internal Banks

Post by TiGroove »

Hi,

I'm just starting exploring the Programs, marking some as Favourits, to have a good base for further working and finding usefull sounds and increase a good workflow.

simple Question:

What ist your strategy when you are editing/personalizing Sounds/Programs within the internal Banks. Do you overwrite them or save a copy to a user bank.
I'm asking this because I tend to just overwrite them but I don't know which sidechanining effects this will have to existing combinations.
When I change a Program, then I gues a combination which uses this Programm will sound different afterwards. But I always don't know If or in which Combi the edited Program is used....

So what ist your way of editing Programms ?

Thanks a lot...

If there are only minor changes - like marking it as favorite or maybe some re-assignment of controllers (e.g. SW1 for leslie speed on organs) - i just save it over the existing one. The same applies to everything regarding IFX/MFX/TFX - because the combis carry their own FX, and changing the FX chain in the program won't affect the (existing) combis using that program - as long as you don't re-import the FX to the combi via "Copy from program".

If I really tweak the programs to a different sound (EQ, internal FX like the phasers in EP-1), Envelopes etc. - I save them in an empty slot. Usually, if it's still similar to the original one, I keep the original name and add a song title, my initials or some kind of remark. This way, I can easily deduce later, which template I used.

I overwrite internal programs all the time to adjust them to my taste, and I rarely ever keep a preset as it is, soon as I use the sound. Like Jens, I add a signature to edited sounds to recognize them at a glance. All my favorites are edited sounds, without exception.

There is no problem at all in overwriting internal sounds: if you ever feel the change has become too big and effects combis in a way you don't want, you can just reload the factory program from SSD. So, no problem at all to overwrite anything you want, as long as you keep the basic sound character of a program.

if you don't use the factory combis then it should be no problem to overwrite the default programs.

If you use factory combis then the best way is to modify the original program and store that to your own user bank. This way the combis will stay working as intended.

(On the OASYS) I overwrite existing and then assign to the user defined category - in both progs and combi.

My favourites are just that - a mix of my own sounds and factory/third party.

I save everything to a user bank, leaving the stock programs unchanged.

Because:

-I'm fairly new at this and it's not confusing
-I can find those programs very quickly
-I feel I should leave the factory sounds intact in case I may want to modify the same program again, but differently
-I have more free slots than I need
-It works good!
