Opening Kronos - Will it instantly void warranty?

Post by vinylwizard »

So,

I've just (3 weeks ago) bought a Kronos 61 in the uk. I know there is the option of paying £99 and sending the kronos to Korg via my dealer where they will install the extra 1gb of ram and install a 30gb SSD.

The problem with this is:
a) I have to ship my kronos away and i'd rather not be without it! :)
b) I'd much rather have a bigger drive than 30gb installed now we have sample streaming..and my dealer said korg will not install larger for me
c) £99 is not a fantastic deal.. I can pay £99 or less and get a much larger SSD

Is there a warranty seal (ie. void if broken sticker) on the kronos that indicates when the kronos has been opened?

thanks

To go by the book, yes.
In reality, it's kind of pot look. They may or may not support you.

Not an easy decision to make.
If they only included a 120GB drive in that offer people would be far more willing to consider shipping off their KRONOS.
Is there a warranty seal (ie. void if broken sticker) on the kronos that indicates when the kronos has been opened?
No.
The only way to know if a unit has been open is to stick your head inside and see if there's something in there that didn't come from the factory.

Sharp.

I had the same dilemma as you earlier this year. I have worked in IT and have been taking apart, fixing, and modifying all sorts of electronics for almost 20 years now. That being said, I had a service center install the upgraded RAM when OS 1.5 supported it. But when the support was added for the 2nd HDD, I did it myself. Why? Because it's not hard and I know what I'm doing. Also, knowing full well that there are no "void if removed" stickers anywhere on the inside making it feel better.

Not that I'm advocating it, but if you ever have probs with your Kronos and need to send it in for warranty work, you could always just remove your extra drive. The RAM, I am fairly sure that nobody at Korg tracks installations of that - and being that there's no "official supported" list of parts, so I highly doubt anyone would bat an eye at the service center if they saw an extra stick in there. My local Korg repair center is an independent shop, and I kind of doubt that they would even say anything if they saw a 2nd SSD in there.

Just my 2 cents.

that makes complete sense, and I agree with you. I would expect my local
service/repair center to be equally friendly.

Someone would have to really hack up their Kronos to void the warranty, in my humble opinion.

I would think if an owner is careful with the 2nd SSD add on, they should be fine with holding the warranty.

Whats obvious to me, is that Korg greatly benefits from sales of their libraries and 3rd party sample libs. 2.02 makes large user samples doable. So we really need a large SSD to enjoy many of the various sample libs that are offered for sale.

Yes, I also replaced the original fan for this was way too loud and will upgrade memory myself....in case of warranty I would just remove my aditional parts out of the kronos. therefore I did feft the original fan unplugged inside.

This is strange, if you add ram to your pc your warranty will also not lost...years ago i also expanded the ram of a yamaha sampler and no warranty issues with that...so it seems to be a korg special behavior.

Whether opening your KRONOS will void your warranty or not depends very much on the country or region you purchased it from, as consumer law varies substantially. For example, many states/countries have a mandatory statutory warranty which applies irrespective of any voluntary warranty Korg may offer.

Although Korg may stipulate that your warranty may be void if you add your own RAM, you may still be covered by a statutory warranty that dictates that the device be free of defects in materials or workmanship. If something went wrong with your KRONOS and Korg refused to fix it, they would need to show that the defect was caused by the act of the user adding RAM, and not through defects in materials or workmanship.

If companies were able to stipulate that a warranty was automatically void if the user made any repairs or modifications, then I'm sure car companies would specify that the user had to visit a dealership to have the fuel topped up, and PC manufacturers would blame every PC fault on software the user had installed without their express permission!

So in short, it might be worth checking the consumer law in your part of the world, but as long as any faults that occur in the future are not the result of your tinkering, you should be fine.
