loading esx libraries

Post by raphus »

I apologize in advance; this seems like really basic information. I'm a reasonably intelligent person, but I'm completely new to anything more complex than an analog or VA synth.

I'm having a lot of trouble loading samples/patches and EXs libraries from the Korg site. I had mixed success with some CP80 samples/patches that I read about from this forum, and no success with the Karo CP80 EXs, despite (I believe) following the instructions in the Operation Guide to the letter.

I'm trying to load the Karo CP80 EXs. Following the instructions on p. 193 for loading individual .PCGs (which reference the instructions for loading multiple elements together on p. 190), I open "EXs Electric Grand" from the USB flash drive in my Kronos 73 running the OS 2.0.2. This reveals EXs60.KSC, EXs60.PCG, and EXs60.SNG folders that I can open or load. P.190 suggest I should load .SNG, and p.193 suggest I should load .PCG; I've tried both with no success (except at erasing the contents of my UserA bank, which I can restore no problem). I've tried opening and/or loading every combination I can of these folders and/or their contents, checking or not checking the "Load…SNG too" and/or "Load…PCG too" boxes in the subsequent Load window with the "Append" radio button checked. This might be the crucial information--in this Load window, there's a red error message at the bottom: "KSC is incomplete due to uninstalled EXs:EXs60."

I don't understand what could be uninstalled, since I've installed everything that came with the dowload. When I go to program mode, the patches from this EXs are there, but the underlying samples are not. Incidentally, I got exactly the same error message and the same symptoms (patches but no underlying samples) with some user CP80 samples shared by various Korg users.

I don't think I'm an idiot, but I can't figure out what's going on. I would really, REALLY appreciate any help. There's an additional Korg library and an Irish Act library I want to buy, but not until I know I'll be able to actually load them.

One additional question: It seems like the only way to chose what bank the presets go to is to select something other than "all" in the ".PCG Contents" field of the Load window. Other than "all," though, the rest of the options appear to be Kronos banks, which doesn't make sense since the items are being loaded from a flash drive, not the internal Kronos drive. I guess I'm just really lost, and the manual is not helping. I'm happy to supply my phone number if talking about this is easier than typing, and I'll gladly buy the person who reads my entire question and solves my problem(s) a bottle of wine.

Thanks very much in advance,
Robert

It´s not you. Korg just implemented a much to complex interface and workflows for things that should be easy. The UI looks nice but sucks.
It was advanced for the 90ties.

Load the EXs60.KSC files on the Global page under sample management and put it on autoload and reload everything. Load the PCG file to a bank of your choosing after that and write the global parameters to disk with the drop down menu "write global settings".

It´s a total mess this kind of "go there, click here, drop that, reload all, write bla.."

This machine sounds so great but begs to be hit with a stick.
The programmer is from the time of steam engines I think.

It worked, one more question

Post by raphus »

Thanks VERY MUCH for the fast reply. I think my problem was that I'd put the contents of the EXs folder onto my flash drive, but not the outermost EXs folder itself. Anyway, it worked this time, so thanks!

I have one remaining question, though: I don't know how to put the files where I want them. When I load the PCG file, I appear to have two options under ".PCG contents"--either select "all" in which case the files overwrite the patches in my User-A bank, or select a source AND destination bank, which doesn't make sense to me. If I'm loading data from the attached flash drive, why would I ever want to select one of the internal or user banks as the source of PCG data? The data are on the flash drive, not already in the Kronos, or I wouldn't be loading them in the first place.

So, Is there a way to load the data from the flash drive directly to a user bank of my choosing? As things are now, I need to let the Kronos put everything into User-A, then move the patches manually to User-AA, then manually restore my sounds to User-A. Surely it doesn't need to be this cumbersome?

Thanks again for the advice!

Open the PCG, don't load it. You'll see at least something called "programs" (sometimes combi or set list or global too). Open programs too. Now you'll see the available program banks in that PCG. Click load on the one you'd like to load. The Kronos now prompts you where you'd like to put it.
Enjoy your new sounds!

As a further tip; if you also go into the bank inside the PCG, you can actually browse and hear the sounds and load individual ones to any spot you want. The only thing is if they use custom samples you have to load those first.

Is there a way to treat underlying samples the same way, or do I have to load the all the samples first? I ask because I don't yet see a way to delete samples from the Korg ROM or an EXs that I don't want.
