How Do The Krome Acoustic/Elec Pianos Compare to M-50?

Post by nitekatt2010 »

Hey. I have a Korg M-50 88 and haven't tried a Krome yet. How does the new Krome acoustic piano compare to the M-50 and the electric pianos?
Thanks kart

Katt - I haven't played the Krome. But, based on the specs the pianos are bound to be a significant improvement over those found on the M50. That said, it's really a subjective call. You'd need to play it for yourself.

In Krome's favor is the fact that the samples are taken from Kronos:
"Kronos-derived full length, unlooped piano and drum sounds, plus new electric pianos designed to shine on stage" (Source: KORG USA web site)

Also, the Krome has 120 voices of polyphony to the M50's 80 voices. And, it has the sequencer from the M3 Xpanded - and a large color touchscreen.

That covers most of the differences between the two boards in a nutshell. In most other respects (except for maybe the respective semi-weighted keybeds), the Krome would probably be quite similar to the M50. That includes the pricepoint.

The other big difference would be that I can run Karma on the M50 and it looks like there will be no Karma available for Krome unfortunately..

After some poking around, i've been led to believe that karma didnt launch with the korg m50. It might have been promised in the launch though, which I dont think is true.

That being said, I wouldnt find it totally impossible for krome to get karma.

If you want an M50 with Karma, try the M3.

You would be mistaken on karma and krome unfortunately. Karma does not belong to Korg it is owned by Stephen Kay. I have asked him about this and there are no plans for Karma for Krome as he is too busy with several other projects. I use Karma on my M50 almost every single day of the year.
It really expands the M50 capabilities.
