Drawbar help!

Post by mocando »

Guys, I'm trying to make the sound of the organ on this Genesis song, and particularly in this tour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icHT3Rq3FAE
You can hear the organ I'm trying to emulate from 0:50 all the way through the half of the song. Tony used it as chords for the beginning, and then for accompaniment for the first solo.

I don't have a Kronos, but since my keyboard have drawbar emulation, I thought this might be the best place to ask for.

I'm already using full percussion, and a 1/2 down the first (leftmost) drawbar and 1/4 the one next to it. All the other in the up position, but it doesn't sound even close.

Any ideas?

Many thanks
Martin Ocando

Tony gave up using a Leslie early in Genesis' career. IIRC, he used an MXR Phase 100, (heard at the beginning) and a Boss CE-1 model chorus on his organ sound. Also, he traditionally used the first 3 drawbars. I know on the Prophet-10 he used the 2 oscillators for the 16' and the 8' sines, and then had the filter resonate for the 5 1/3' sine.

Perhaps it's the chorus effect that is missing?

It wasn't Hammond organ here as said, it was an emulation.

The problem with drawbar settings is they are only relevant to the organ you are using - your only option is to listen and pull the drawbars out one at a time to see if you can get close.

I have a Hammond XK3C and this is the technique I use to find the right sound - I've been copying Tony Banks for 10 years

Also a said after "A Trick of the Tail" he used the MXR100 instead of a Leslie - personally I prefer the original, you can't beat a Leslie cab.
But to be accurate you should use the MXR.

Awesome. Will take a closer look at phaser and chorus. Although, I'm not gonna get much of this poor Casio thing until I get my Krome. Then again, I won't have drawbars to play with. I'll have to emulate a hammond with 9 sines on the Krome. So sad they didn't included a hammond engine like the one in the Kronos.

Alan, I'm rebuilding an old site of mine (link in sig), and if you are interested, I invite you to write some articles on tips for getting Genesis sounds. I already have one that I wrote with the help of Santi of wecantdance.nl. But the more the merrier.

Thanks again.

Interesting that.....Wonder where Santi got that info ;)

Alan is a very helpful chap who is a great player as well as having all the right sounds. I was honoured to play with his band recently so listen to him on this track.

I see that you have a Wavestation. Have you not tried to build the sound on that? I'm not in my studio right now but if I'm not mistaken Tony Banks used one since the "We Can't Dance" era and I'm pretty sure that you can stack up enough sounds to get pretty close to the sound you are looking for. Plus you should be able to get the correct phaser effect as well. I'm not familiar with the Casio but I do have a Wavestation EX and it is quite a capable machine.

Hi

In my experience you can get approximate sounds but you won't get within the last 10% that makes you say "yes, that's it!".
Depends on how easily pleased you are

I've gone through a lot of different keyboards and patches trying to find the right combination of original sound combined with original effects.

e.g. A basic Hammond T100 organ sound it quite easy to find but I haven't found a phaser effect in a keyboard that sounds anything like an MXR100.

I guess that means that the next thing is to look for an MXR100 phaser pedal.
I have to admit that I haven't seen one in a very long time.
Good luck!

Why not just use your Triton's phaser effect?

He wants the real thing - MX 100 is not easy to copy and you can get them on Amazon:
