ARP Pro Soloist Patch on Radias

Post by Mutiny in Jonestown »

Hi all, I've built a Radias patch to emulate the old ARP Pro Soloist lead synth sound used in the mid 70's by Tony Banks of Genesis. It's the solo sound used throughout 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' especially on the song 'In the Cage'.

The ARP Pro Soloist was a simple 1 oscillator machine with 30 preset sounds and I'm recreating the 'Fuzz Guitar' patch. What made this ARP unusual was instead of coming equipped with a mod wheel, you introduced vibrato by aftertouch. Of course, our Radias keyboard doesn't send aftertouch; but, if you're controlling the Radias with a different keyboard that sends the aftertouch MIDI message, it's not hard to setup.

Here are the steps necessary to make this happen.

1) Verify your master kybd is transmitting the Aftertouch MIDI event
2) Back on the Radias now, set Global:P04 MIDI:MIDI5=A.Touch
3) Set virtual patch 1: Source=LFO1:Dest=Pitch:Intensity=0
4) Set virtual patch 2: Source=MIDI5:Dest=Patch1Int:Intensity=20
5) Set LFO1 Wave=Tri, Freq=10Hz

To get the 'Fuzz Guitar' sound...

1) Set OSC1 to saw...turn off all other sound sources
2) Set Pitch VibratInt=+2400cent
3) Set Voice Assign=Mono
4) Throw in some reverb
5) Set Portamento=25
6) Set LFO2 Wave=Sine, Freq=10.5Hz

Now, you can control LFO1 Mod of OSC1 with aftertouch and LFO2 Mod of OSC1 with ModWheel.

Also, I'm happy to share a transcription of the 'In the Cage' solo with anyone in SMF and/or PDF format...just PM me with your email addy...Have fun!
