what synth for my son, the bassist?

Post by jgsidak »

My 16-year-old son plays bass in a rock band. In addition to drums, there is a shredding lead guitarist and a rhythm guitar/lead vocalist. The band plays a respectable cover of YYZ by Rush, as well as several songs from the Flying Colors album released this year. They currently use no synths, but I think that my son should either double (a la Geddy Lee) on synths, especially on YYZ near the end, or play bass pedals through a synth.

Would folks recommend a Kronos for this performance situation, or a used Oasys?

Or something else entirely?

if you need synth bass, i would go with Moog Minitaur or Taurus III, nothing less.

if you search for a less specific synth, choice will depend upon many factors: you need acoustic sounds or just synth, you need workstation features or not (e.g. sequencer), you want a synth with a easy learning curve o it's ok with something overwhelming.

a think that a Kronos or Oasys is too much for the need of your son in this moment and you may also consider a less costly good synth such as clavia or access virus

I've been a pro bass player for over 30 years and dabble in keyboards. I would not suggest a Kronos or Oasys at this point is his playing career. If you want something newer that's high quality I suggest something like this:

Korg Kronos 61

access virus is expensive...
maybe a used roland fantom or used kronos is cheaper, and will do the job..
Love my kronos 88 :D
Love my yamaha psr s910 as well

Korg Kronos 88, Yamaha PSR s910, Korg C720, Yamaha DTX 520, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, a pair of Yamaha HS80 in (soon not to be) an unproperly treated room..

what about the new King Korg? It looks good for prog rock and he can learn subtractive synthesis on it.
