Korg R3 How do I modulate?

Post by ph.billy »

Hi everyone,
I'm new to synths :)
Reading the manual in how to record a modulation sequence.
First, I would like to ask, what exactly is a modulation sequence?
Second, I am not sure if the modulation has been recorded.
From what I understand:

1. select synth program
2. select timbre
3. turn mod. seq on.
4. press record button
5. turn knobs until the rec button goes dark and stops.
6. when keyboard is played the sequence will play back.

I don't understand steps 5 and 6. How do I start the recording and how do I end the recording?

Thanks

Once you have both the Motion Sequence and Record buttons lit, the 16 lights around the main wheel will circle around. When it gets to this point, you have to hit a key to record the knob turn. It'll record for the 16 steps and the lights will stop chasing once it's done. Now you can hold down a key and hear the motion sequence playing.

Happy New Years :)

16 steps means 16 key hits, or 16 knob turns?

After each time I turn the knob and change the settings, I hit a key to record it?

How do I store it onto the synth?

so from what I understand, modulation is creating your own unique sounds?
I read the definition off a website but i'm not sure i understand its complicated terms.

16 steps basically means 16 automated knob turns.

The best way to understand how it works is by drawing a straight line on a piece of paper, then put a dot on the start of the line, a dot in the middle, then a dot in the end. Now, pick three random numbers, either positive or negative and write them next to each dot. When you look at the line from left to right, each dot represents a "step" and the number you wrote for each dot represents a numeric "value" that will be changed on each step, as if you were turning the knob. The steps can be looped, one-shot, reversed, etc. and you have up to 16 of them.

Modulation can mean a number of things, but in this case, it means "automation." When you choose the "source" for the sequencer, it will be what the numbers for each step will automate the values for that parameter.
