Combination levels playing live

Post by jamiedtunes »

Hi,

After a long hiatus, Im back to playing live again.

I've been getting complaints about the inconsistant levels of my Triton Studio patches from the sound man. I'm afraid that if the EQ levels are changed, the character of the patches will be destroyed. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

You might try using the master EQ to raise or lower overall volume level, just keep in mind to keep the changes proportional.

It's also likely that the inherent qualities of a sound like timbre and dynamic range (piano/brass) may be something that is catching your sound guy off balance.

I have the same problem, but have found that the coloration of the full PA, especially the addition of subs, as opposed to the relatively flat response (headphones) I use to tweak and write combos is at least as much at fault in contributing to this issue.

Professionally speaking, touring players tweak volume to the system they'll actually be using, and do not depend on the sound man except to work out overall balance of the whole band. It might then sound wonky in your monitors or back in the studio, but if the system is happy that's all that matters.
