Downstairs neighbor complaint...but I play thru headphones

Post by Salto »

Okay...I play a Korg keyboard in my room with headphones only

I live in a 3 story apt. on the top floor...I play after 10 pm because I work till 8pm

2nd story Downstairs Neighbor called office 5x...said it sounds like we have a tradmill.....came to my home last week and tonight banged 2 separate times on ceiling.....

I PLAY THROUGH HEADPHONES......So i moved stand from against the wall....Will that help?

Am I unreasonable or are they??

I guess you can feel the clikity, click click.....and I do use the pedal....

Help

They are being unreasonable...play without headphones and let them know how considerate you are being

Could be you're stomping your foot to the beat without realizing?
Even it not, a simple rug underneath your stand and feet could do a lot.

Move the keyboard into a room that''s not directly on top of your neighbours' bedroom (and get a carpet).

That said your building must be really badly soundproofed.

You are obviously still making enough noise to cause a problem for them. There's no reason why you can't completely silence your playing so that they can't hear anything, but that will depend on how poorly your building is constructed. The primary reason you should silence your playing is for your own benefit, so that you can play whenever you want, however long you want, without your neighbors hearing you at all. Assume that anything that you can hear while playing is somehow being transmitted to their rooms. Sometimes sounds can actually be louder in other rooms than where the source is located because of resonance and rattling. It sucks when that happens, but a lot of buildings weren't originally constructed to have effective sound insulation between living spaces, particularly older buildings.

It could the mechanical noise associated with playing the keys - that's a very loud sound - and it you play a lot and your fingers are fit, then the downward pressure is significant (Pressure - Force / Area - and the area of the finger is small so the pressure is great). So all of that downward pressure on the keys make a significant mechanical 'thud' and if you play continuously - as in - if you're a keyboard player - then that will be very loud, and also with sizable mechanical vibration passing though the floor too. Just listen to yourself play without powering the Kronos on and you'll hear what I mean.

There's not a lot you can do about this - the best would be to put a shag pile rug under the keyboard - but even that will be limited.

Looks like that building was built like crap if that kind of thing transfers to lower floor. Not thick enough ceilings.

I'd move the hell out of there.

This brings back some memories from college. I had a guy who lifted weights at night while I was trying to sleep. He worked at night and slept during the day.

One day, after being kept up all night, I turned my Marshall Amp / Guitar on, put the amp on "11" and let it feedback. I left for class with it on.

Management left me a letter.

Was worth it!

I have this problem too ... tapping the floor without realizing (and you don't hear it because your ears are isolated with the head phone).

Is it a 73 or an 88? Sometimes I play really hard without realizing it. Even in my house, I've woken my son up a few times just from the clunk of the keys (playing thru headphones). And this was from 25 feet away in a different room.

I don't have weighted keys and I don't play heavily and we have a really well built 1920's house. But I play my keyboard upstairs on a carpeted floor and I've been told that I can be heard thudding along downstairs in the kitchen.

I think it really does help if you can get a scrap piece of carpet or a rug to put under your board.

That's the reason, a well built modern house with a concrete ceiling/floor plate is far more noise insulating than a 100 year old house with a ceiling/floor plate made of wood beams and slats.
