Leaving the house of Korg.... :(
I chose the SV1 because I LOVE the design and the concept... it truly seems to have a soul. I loved the simplicity of the way it works, and the Rhodes sounds are simply incredible! But the bottom line is the piano sounds just weren't cutting it for me. Yes they were great, but I guess the Kronos spoiled me. I had the Kronos for a short while, but decided to sell it because it was way more than I needed. I figured the SV1 would be perfect replacement... and it almost was for me.
So I just made a radical decision to return it, and trade up to the the Nord Stage 2. The price difference is literally sickening, but I'm hoping I will be happier with the sounds. I really hope I'm not making a huge mistake. I'm really a sucker for the "awe" of the SV1, and I'm afraid to see it go.
Does anyone here have experience with the Nord Stage?

Fellow keyboard player at church has the first gen one. Nice unit and I can't put it down one bit. More sounds then the SV1. Surprised by the sv1 issue though considering the amount of sample rom it has at 512mb. The pianos shouldn't have such a short decay.
Yup it is expensive but you got a great board.
Good luck!

I had my eyes on the Nord first- was playing around with a Nord Piano that was on huge discount. Was about to settle for that, went home, brought my wife back to the store, and it was sold.
Looked at the SV-1-and my wife said it looked so much nicer than the Nord (they had a Nord Electro 2). They happened to have the matching stand and case for the SV-1 and made me a deal on the complete package (basically everything for $200 the retail of the keyboard alone).
So enjoy the Nord- I know you will like it and learn it's oddities.
I appreciate all unique keyboards so congrats!

I agree. The piano sound is not usable for live settings. No matter how I set them up, they are not cutting through at all, when playing together with other instruments. Try to play a Jerry Lee Lewis tune with a band and the SV-1. A bit disappointing for a so called stage piano. I know the SV-1 is not the most expensive keyboard, but my 26 year old Roland piano, has better piano sounds for pop and rock gigs. (The SV-1 Rhodes sound is great though!)spumoni wrote:But the bottom line is the piano sounds just weren't cutting it for me.
The Nord Stage is twice the price, but you can't go wrong with this keyboard. You see a lot of them on stages, and this can't be because of the Nord hype only. I have a Nord C2, that cost me the same as the SV-1. This organ is so great, and I can't stop playing it when I start

Thanks for the positive feedback. One tends to get a little fearful when spending more than double for a keyboard they've never seen, touched, or heard in person before. I just packed up the beautiful SV1, and I must admit I'm really sad to see it go. The damn thing just looks so cool.
I expect the Nord Stage 2 to arrive this afternoon. By the way, I also got the Nord legs and the ridiculously over priced triple pedal. I keep looking at my credit card to make sure it doesn't burst into flames.
One thing I'm NOT looking forward to is the learning curve of the Nord. Swedes think differently than the Japanese. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the SV1.

Well I got the Nord today, and at first listen the piano was definitely an improvement over the SV1. But for the money, I was expecting that.
However I must admit, I already miss certain things with the SV1. The EP sounds were simple, but they always sounded good. The Nord is a little more complicated. It seems to more effort to make the EP sounds good.
I loved the tape delay - so far I don't see one on the Nord.
I'm sure there is a learning curve, but these are my first impressions.

There is a reason why so many Nord Stage's grace many live keys players rigs, and it isn't because of the Hype, until you've used one live you wouldn't fully appreciatte the persona of these great instruments, not only its superb build quality but the functionality your getting is phenomenal, for a long time I always wanted to get a NS2 but wasn't convinced that the price was justifiable for what it gave me over the SV-1 that I already was happy with for Live use,but after several in person demos of the NS2,don't know why I held off for so long, but in a way was glad I did as the price was a lot lower than when I first looked at them.
I have never been so blown away by what some may class as simply a mediocre meat and potatoes live keyboard, which couldn't be more further away from the truth as such and what it has to offer..then you realise why very few of the Nord Stage instruments(first gen)hardly ever grace the Secondhand market, there is no hype, these Instruments sell themselves, and perhaps why there is so much love for the Electro series too within Live circles.
There is no steep learning curve with the NS2,even if your not familiar with Nords way of doing things, you have to remember that they are user friendly interfaces, built mainly for on the fly tweaking so everything is Live and tweakable from the front panel, there is very little need for digging into LCD Menus and most secondary functions on the panel are accessed by using the Shift button.I think I have referenced the Manual twice since owning it.
One of the best things about the Nords for me anyway,is the ability to personalise it with whatever samples you choose to fill it with,I rate the SV-1 and still have a use for it within my rig alongside the NS2 and theres a reason why the Nord costs that little extra over the SV-1 but when you realise what you have at your disposal with the NS2 you won't feel so overwhelmed by the price difference.

What you say makes complete sense. Also, I am not a professional musician so I will never be able to judge these keyboards in a live setting.
I definitely am impressed with the build quality of the Nord. I was also curious to see how the action of the keys felt compared to the SV1 (which I was pretty happy with considering all of the complaints I've been reading). As soon as I played the Nord, I immediately felt the difference in the action. No doublt, I prefer the Nord's action. Now I know what everyone is talking about when they describe the SV-1's keys as being heaving and sluggish.
I know that I'll be sticking with the Nord. Mainly for the sound quality and the ability to load my own custom sounds. The editor seems very easy to use so far.
But, I still have to vouch for the SV1. Especially for the price - it really holds it's own. The final straw for me was not having the ability to create my own splits in the SV1. I thought I could live with it, but it turns out I couldn't. Today it heads back to Sweetwater - I hope I'm not making a terrible mistake... Thank you Korg for making a great piece of equipment at a very reasonable price.

I was hoping for a SV-2 at NAMM. Didn't happen, so Casio is getting my business with the new Pro PX-5S. I can't justify going back to the SV-1.

I totally agree. I wanted to upgrade to an SV-2 but Korg seems to have abanonded the SV-1 as its going on 4 years since it first came out with no real improvements (last years change in key color doesnt mean anything).Low Class wrote:I was hoping for a SV-2 at NAMM. Would be nice if Korg could just tell us what their plans for the SV are, but I cant wait for years and maybe never so I will now be looking at the Nords and Casios. The SV-1 is great fun but its needs updating and I cant keep waiting.
Unless something happens at NAMM today or this weekend, definitely the worse NAMM ever.
SV! or Nord?
I have owned Nords and gigged with the Electros for a few years.Yes it is a fine board and an even a finer company, but it doesn't move me like the SV1! The ep's and the fx section on the SV1 blow the Nord away.I feel like I am playing a real instrument on the SV! ,which is a feeling I don't get with either the Kronos or the Nords! True, the SV! is limited in what it does, but what it does is like no other board I've ever played.
WTF!!! I think you are RIGHT. I'm trying to figure out why the Nord EP's aren't as exciting to me... and the effects too!
With two twists of a knob I could have a an over driven crunchy EP sound. On the Nord it's not so simple, and I still can't get the results I'm looking for. Plus I really loved that tape delay effect...
I keep telling myself it MUST be better because I spent DOUBLE for the damn thing. Plus UPS never picked up the Korg today, so the box will be sitting here staring at me all weekend...

The SV1 pianos work great for me in recording, but not live, so I'm still searching for a good gigging keyboard. I don't have much call for e.p.s, unfortunately.
I'm a bit curious about that new SP280 that Korg announced yesterday... I've always liked how the SP250 behaved in a band setting, but the e.p.s (one with no control over vibrato) were weak. The speakers the most powerful I've ever seen in a stage piano, but I'm a bit worried about the NH keybed. I wasn't very impressed with the SP170 that I played.
I'm also thinking of testing out the Kawai ES7. I've got the ES4, and it really works well in a band setting. Bang on the keys, you get much louder notes! The ES7 appears to have much more detailed samples.
