Click track in a Combi

Post by roly D »

Hi all.

I am predominantly a guitarist, who has picked up a Kronos 61 in order to extend the musical palette of the largely hobby-ist band I enjoy playing in.

As part of the process of working the K into the band I have started sequencing a few parts and have recently worked out (with the assistance of threads on this forum) how to send the metronome to an audio out so that I can suggest to our drummer that putting some headphones on would be a good idea :D.

I also want to play some combis that have Karma patterns and drum tracks that I would like to maintain as part of the sound (eg "Restless Natives"). So far, however, I have been unable to work out - despite some similar threads and, yes, reading the manuals - how to add a click drum pattern alongside the existing drum pattern.

I have seen and tested the "solution" of going into sequencer record mode and using that click. That is ok but I have also seen it suggested (both in the forums and in the Op guide) that a combi drum track can run two patterns at once. Unfortunately though, I have not seen it explained anywhere how to actually make this happen.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I see several solutions to your requirement. Assuming you want to have an existing "rythm" provided by either existing Drum Tracks or by KARMA (called Drum Patterns, not the same as Drum Tracks):
1. Record the Drum Track you wish to use on Sequencer mode, then manually add the click to the recorded Drum Track and save that sequence as a new Drum Track, so you can use both simultaneously in your Combi.
2. Any Timbre on the Combi will play if it receives MIDI data on its channel. Therefore you can direct a KARMA Drum Pattern as well as the Drum Track to the same MIDI Channel (Timbre) and you can simultaneously play both. For this case, I'm assuming either the KARMA Drum Pattern or the Drum Track has the rythm and the other has the click. It may be a little complicated to create a click Drum Pattern on KARMA and you may need to find a simple pattern and apply some note mapping or similar.

IMHO, the option 1 is the simpler to implement. Yes, it's true that on a Combi, you can have more than one simultaneous pattern, but this is so because you can direct KARMA and the Drum Track to the same MIDI Channel. Indeed, you may have even more simultaneous patterns playing the Drum Timbre by assigning several KARMA modules to the same MIDI channel...
