When I upgraded to the Xpanded pack, it ruined my sounds =(

Post by jeremypyle »

About 3 years ago I purchased a Korg m388 keyboard and was absolutely amazed at the sounds and what it could do. Probably less than a year after purchasing it, I upgraded the Korg workstation to the Xpanded pack. This greatly altered the sounds on the keyboard. So many of the sounds either do not work now or sound completely horrible. I have hardly used the Korg for a couple of years as I have not known what to do. I wish I could uninstall the Xpanded pack but I don't know how to do this. How do I downgrade from the Xpanded pack to the original factory setting? Is there a way to do this?

So by saying you have the Xpanded pack, you mean it's a USB with the EXP sounds on it ?
Assuming it is so...
Go to media and check that the expanded files are not set to Auto-load.
IF theyre not. Go to Global and in the drop-down menu go to Reload PCG, Demo data etc... That will load up all of your factory state sounds, excluding the EXP sounds which will remain on your USB stick, until you wish to load them.
I repeat, i'm answering this with an assumption that you have the Xpanded as a USB stick.
Hope it helps cheers.

Dunno if this applies to you n yer M3 BUT...after loading the "upgrades" in mine via usb I realized there were lots of "quirks" in the actual Layout of the programs. some worked some didnt. Stephen Kay explained to me Korg has a sumwhat (my term: ECCENTRIC) way of laying out there voices(programs what ever korg calls them...). when you update they can get scattered/changed so on...BUT you CAN also update to another program mod that puts all pianos together/all other instruments as well in ORDER. I did this and noticed that afterwards not only did some progs were easier to find they seemed to sound more on target as well! I cant remember the name of the file but i bet most katz on here do... it's a PCG/PNG file...sumthin like that that puts your instruments in proper ranks pianos with pianos/synth w/ synth..ect..ect.. if i was where i could get to my M3 id look it up...sorry..but just try n see if it doesnt help. I bought this like 4-5 days ago and about %^&* when i found out how old/lack of hardware/actual company support/ect.. you get..but the more i tweak, learn the more im getn sorta to liking this board! :)

M3 file

Post by bfburkejr »

PC/MAC:Soundware:M3_Producer.zip
That's the name as listed on the KORG site. When downloaded it comes as a ZIP file with the following name:
M3_Producer_633659963808630000.zip
Inside of the ZIP file you will find a ReadMe.txt; M3_PRODUCER_VNL_EFGJ1.pdf; and the important one PRODUCER.PCG. This will rearrange your files so that they are grouped together by instrument type, included is also and explanation of what the file will do, how to install it, why the files were arranged like they were originally etc. It is a very complete little download. If you cannot find it for some reason, I have it and would be glad to e-mail it to you. Send me an e-mail at bfburkejr@rochester.rr.com.
Peace,
Brian
P.S. - if you install it and write over your original "unExpanded" files then they will no longer be available to you, so make a backup or do it on a USB stick like you did the first eXpanded upgrade. I don't see how the sound of the programs would change like you said though, unless KORG changed the programs themselves in the eXpanded upgrade.

If you have upgraded to the eXpanded Version 2 then you should not need PRODUCER.PCG and I would not recommend loading it. Other than a few programs at the beginning of Bank-A they are already grouped by instrument type. The Producer PCG was intended for Version 1.

Sorry for the bad info

Post by bfburkejr »

I appologize for the bad info. I never tried loading the file but knew of it as I have all the KORG stored files on my computer, lots of drive space 12 TB, I never tried it because I have a Sweetwater Special Version were they intall the larger flash card fot the added exp Insruments and also some sound fonts of their own and I didn't know if the PCG file would erase them. It is impossible to tell from the KORG site that the file is for nonexpanded version one.
