Any way to get SFX sound from R3 on Kronos - J3 (Windstrm)?

Post by 2muchguitarkit »

Hi there,

Proud (and relatively new) owner of a Kronos, currently in the process of working through the very steep learning curve. A question that I've got which I haven't been able to find anything on yet (apologies if I'm covering old ground):

I want to use one of the SFX sounds from the Korg R3 in a live performance, and I'd rather not have to bring the R3 along as well. Is there any way for me to get this sound onto the Kronos? It's the J3 (Windstrm) setting from the R3. Basically a swirling/stormy wind sound, and I can't find anything similar in the Kronos (I-F052 is the closest, but it's a bit too up-and-down/near-and-far - I want something a bit more consistent).

Thanks in advance for your help,

Pete

You can sample the R3 with the Kronos and create a Program for it. See the OG Sampling section for details.

You're certainly right about the learning curve, I just got my Kronos, and as a busy student, there's no way I'm going to get it really figured out until summer vacation!

Sampling would probably be the easiest way to go to get a sound you like from your Korg R3, but tweaking the closest program you can find on the Kronos might more rewarding. My impression is that the hardest of the classic Korg MOSS synthesis sounds to achieve on Kronos are the glassy ones involving Comb Filtered noise. It seems overly-complicated and a bit counterintuitive, but you may need to run a synth sound through the STR-1 physically modelled string to get those. But I may well be missing something!

I don't know the R3 that well, but I don't think there is much in there that the AL1 engine in the Kronos can't do. You could open the patch in the R3 pc editor and simply try to copy the parameters into an AL1 instance in the Kronos. I think sampling is as least as much trouble as doing this (assuming you're a relative newbie). And it would probably be a more versatile solution.

Also important is whether you use that patch just to trigger the effect from the keyboard or if you tweak knobs while you're playing. In the first case, sampling will give you the most exact sound (i.e. identical). In the second case, most likely the copying parameters method will do better.
