Radias Editor Question
I have a Radias (with version 2.0 upgrade) and I'm using the version 2.0 editor.
All was working well and I've suddenly lost all Midi communication between the editor and the Radias.
The only thing I'de changed was Midi control in Global mode to external USB. (I've changed that back to internal but still no joy)
I've uninstalled and reloaded the Radias korg driver and likewise with the editor but that hasn't worked.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't think there is a "midi control" global parameter. I think you're referring to either the Local Control or Clock parameters. Local Control can be on or off. Clock can be Auto, Internal, Ext-USB or Ext-midi. You need to set the MIDI Routing parameter to either USB or USB+MIDI. Midi Channel should be 01. You should be able to connect if the Korg USB-midi driver is set to midi port from midi0 to midi9. You can use the Uninstall KORG USB-MIDI Device program to view which ports the driver has been assigned to. You may need to remove some other drivers to make room for the Korg deiver.
Be aware that if you move the USB cable to a different port on the computer, you will usually have to uninstall the USB-midi device and add it back with the "Install KORG USB-MIDI Device" program. This is not the same thing as removing the Korg USB-midi driver itself. You can see whether the Radias has been detected by the driver and that it has been installed as a device by pressing the "Device List..." button after you run the Configure Korg USB-Midi Driver, which should show Radias on the list. Often the terms "driver" and "device" are confusing. You install the driver once, and you don't normally need to uninstall the driver. Once the driver is running, then you need to install and remove Korg devices from the driver using these programs. You need to do that if you change which USB ports that you used to install the device. Windows can now have more than 10 midi ports, but Korg devices must be installed in one of the first 10 ports.

xmlguy: Many thanks. That was exactly what I needed to know
I'd meant to write that I'd changed the 'Midi Clock' (not midi control) to external, but was so tired by then that my my brain had stopped working too ...
I hadn't realised the difference between midi drivers and midi devices. I'll try that out today. I had been careful to get all my Korg drivers within the 10 slot Windows XP limit, but I have also changed from an unpowered USB hub to a powered hub - I had thought that just uninstalling and reloading the drivers would do the trick - (my other kit all worked fine after reinstalling their drivers, but I haven't used editors with them on that machine - and this would explain why I got the message 'device not recognised' on editor start-up, while at the same time the Radias was being recognised by Cubase and Windows) - so the information about reinstalling the 'devices' is invaluable. And just when I thought I'd finally understood how Midi connectivity worked
And thank you for the quick response .... This is why I love these forums.

erm ... well I tried that ... but found that I had already done it (re-installed Korg device (as well as the driver)) - I can get the Radias to respond to incoming midi on the midi in cable/port but not through the midi USB (maybe the powered USB hub is causing a problem - which I've had in past when attaching external hard drives (not memory sticks) via USB hub) ... time to check cables and see if the same happens with my other laptop that has worked in past when using the editor ...
I got a message saying 'device ID not recognised' (or somesuch) ...

Yeah, external usb hubs can sometimes be a problem. If you are using a desktop computer, sometimes there are additional USB ports on the motherboard that are unused that you can hook up to a PCI USB connector, or get a PCI USB hub for extra ports on the back. The problem can be with chaining an external powered USB hub through an existing USB port. There are usually fewer problems with USB hubs that are directly on the PCI buss. But if you're on a laptop, then these might not be possible. For testing purposes, I suggest that you simplify the USB connections as much as possible to get the Korg USB-midi driver to work properly with the Radias - removing any non-essential USB devices for testing. Once you have it working, then you can start adding back devices one by one, leaving the USB cable that the Radias is using along, until you discover when it stops working.
You really don't want to use the hardware midi in/out ports on the Radias if at all possible because the communication rate is much slower and often has even more problems with the editor or any sysex midi commands, and it adds the additional complication of incompatibility with the midi interface used on the computer (and its drivers).

I connected the Radias to my laptop.
Whenever I try and recieve or transmit a program I get the message 'Device Enquiry Error'
I am directly connected to the USB ports. I have reloaded the editor and I have unistalled the Korg Driver and Reloaded it. I have checked that the Radias is being recognised by the driver and it shows as a connected device in USB Config tools.
When I open the editor I can see in the log window that the midi and keyboard ports have been set/recognised and I am getting what looks like a handshake in the Midi Monitor window.
When I connect the Radias with midi cables to my Audio/Midi Interface and configure the editor for midi connections. I get a message saying "The Korg Midi driver is not installed ..." for some reason - (The uninstall tool shows that it is installed)
I am using driver 1.14_r4 version.
I am running Version 2 OS on the Radias and using the version 2 editor.
I'm stumped ...

There is a newer driver available. Download and install 1.14_r6. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble in the future if you always check for the latest drivers (even if that's not the problem).
What happens when you choose "Receive All Data"? Do not try to transmit until you verify that you can receive data first. You won't be able to transmit if the memory protect feature is turned on in the global settings on the synth, however you should always be able to receive if everything is working.
You said you uninstalled and reinstalled the Korg Driver when you should have removed and added the Korg Device. You only need to uninstall the Driver when you need to use a newer version. You need to remove and add the Device when you change the USB port for the gear.

Where do I find 1.14_r6?
I installed the 1.14_r4 as that was the latest driver I found on Korg UK's web-site.
I removed and added the korg device (the Radias was recognised by the configuration tool) but it didn't communicate with the radias, so I tried reinstalling the latest driver I could find.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. utilities and the editor twice today and though the device (Radias) is showing as present there's no communication either by USB or by Midi.
Whatever I've tried with the USB and editor I get the message 'Device Enquiry Error' - I can't get the Standard Midi cable to do anything either - I just get the message saying "The Korg Midi driver is not installed ..."
I've spent this evening manually recompiling all the patches that I have in the Radias into the editor and have made sure that I've saved the patch files somewhere safe. (I had originally used the editor to create a 'best of' set of patches which I loaded into the Radias. However I can't find where the editor patch is located that I used to build and transfer the patches originally. Either I didn't save the patch file or something happened and it got wiped from my hard drive.
I have written to Korg tech support and await a reply.
At least now I can try a Factory Reset and see if that works, as I can then restore the 'best of' set from the Editor ... as long as it starts to communicate with the Radias again after the reset. Though I think I'll wait to hear from Korg before doing so.

The driver is at Korg.com. Go to downloads and drivers for the Radias.
Which midi port numbers are you using for the Radias device? You must use midi0 through midi9.
You can find out which ports you're using by running the Uninstall Korg device utility program. You may need to clear out some other midi drivers to make room for the Radias to be in that port range. Be careful not to use any other software like a DAW program while using the editor, just in case the DAW tries to open the Radias midi ports. Only one program can use a usb-midi port at a time, so if the DAW opens that midi port, then the editor won't be able to.

Thanks for web address for the driver. I'll try replacing driver later and let you know how I get on.
The Radias is in slot 6 and the editor is the only programme I have running on my laptop when I've connected the Radias.
Although having the latest driver is sensible I don't understand why it shouldn't be working with drivers that I used previously and which worked perfectly well with the Radias and the Editor.
I've checked the Radias Midi Ports and it recieves midi from my spare Midi keyboard and transmits midi both by USB and Midi cable to my Legacy Software. The Legacy software recognises the Radias USB connection.
So having eliminated the connections and midi signalling as the problem I can only conclude that the problem is with the Radias itself. The only thing that I can think of that may have interfered with it's previous working order was to have checked the OS version on the Radias (three button presses when booting - thus the repeated 'Device Enquiry Error' message that I keep getting.
The problem I'm worried about is that if I restore the factory settings and it restores OS 1.00 AND it still doesn't communicate with either version of the editor; and then I won't be able to use the editor to transfer my new/stored patch(es) into the Radias - which will then mean I may have to send the board back to Korg for repair ...

I try to avoid jumping to conclusions while still trying to diagnose and to fix a specific problem. The possibilities are endless. I try to stick to one thing at a time on a chain of items that are on a specific path. In this case, the path is: Korg driver, Korg device, usb-midi out port, Radias global midi settings, Radias program settings, Radias audio output, audio cable, audio output device (headphones or powered speakers), your ears, your brain, your fingers, your computer, your internet connection, korg forums, and then back to me.
There are techniques to inquire and verify every single link in this chain. We are currently still at the driver link in the chain, until you update it and get back to me. We've touched on the korg device issue, but until the driver link is completed and verified, then it's pretty much pointless to travel too far up the chain. You may be running into a bug that was fixed in the driver. I've listed the chain because I'm really and truly not guessing about what the problem may be at this point. I'm following a chain of diagnosis that is systematic and that will identify the specific point where any problem is occurring, when it fails a test that should succeed. Since I'm not sitting with you and your Radias, I need you to be my eyes and ears to help you test these links.

Good points ... :
Thing is I'm not having any problems with most of the list (just with the communciation between the editor and the Radias and my brain) as all the midi functions are working fine for all the things I've checked out.
I've set up 6 different PC's now for DAW usage (4 of them dedicated soley to the DAW) and have managed to get a reasonable handle on how the driver setups work. What's puzzling me here is that the editor stopped working on one PC that it was already working with and at the same time stopped working my other PC that it was also previously working well with.
I'm doubtful that both PC's would develop a glitch at the same time (unless it was the old driver - however I reason if the driver was causing this then it would effect other users of that driver and I haven't seen anything from anyone else on the forum - of course Radias Editor users may be a thinly populated subset of the forum).
So the common elements, to my mind, are the Radias and the Editor - and as the Editor is a relatively simple programme (and I've uninstalled and reinstalled it three times) my 'intuition' says it's something to do with the Radias.
All the driver tools say that the driver is installed and configured for the Radias and it shows as connected in the driver slot when checking with the uninstall tool and it shows up in the configuration tool when the Radias is on and connected and doesn't show when not connected) - ergo the PC and the configuration tools are recognising that it's connected and active; plus I can play it from an external keyboard when connected by midi either directly or through the soundcard/midi interface/PC.
The editor midi log shows that the editor is recognising the Radias' ports when it is connected and turned on (and says they are missing if I start the editor with the Radias turned off). So the Editor is recognising that Radias is there and is connected. The problem is when the Editor tries to transmit or recieve midi - then the 'Device Enquiry Error' comes up.
Now there may be something I've missed in the Global settings, however I have worked step by step through the installation instructions and setup configuration ... or it could be the as you say an issue with the driver version. I turned the Radias and the laptop on earlier to install the latest driver but somehow became sidetracked into actually playing the thing
I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens and make a report

Hi X-Trade: Sorted
I hadn't tried that as I thought "It's a Midi Editor, so it doesn't work with 'sounds'.
Thank you
And thanks too to XMLguy for the suggestions and help
PS. I've just downloaded and opened the editor manual and sure enough the correct settings are there at the beggining ... note to self - in future RTFM (twice)
...
PPS. So what's puzzling me now is why the Editor settings were changed on both PC's ... I know I didn't change the Editor settings on the Laptop (PC 2) as when I couldn't get the Editor to work on my DAW (PC 1) I just plugged the Laptop straight in and presummably the editor setting were the same as the last time I when I used it ... on t'other hand maybe my brain needs more RAM or a new CPU

So it looks like you changed the midi port names from the right ones to the wrong ones, even though you said you didn't.Sparker wrote: All was working well and I've suddenly lost all Midi communication between the editor and the Radias.

I would have gotten to that link on the chain, but thankfully x-trade took a good shortcut first, saving us both a lot of time getting there.
