Hi there, new user just bought Kronos last week and it is a great keyboard.
Quick question, probably a silly one but here goes;
I have been downloading a few extra patch banks from the korg patches site, and my programs list is basically completely full, and I haven't even tried to huge DX patch dump on the site yet. I may be stupid but am I missing something obvious here, how do I save new programs now, or edit and save my new patch creations. Do I really need to start deleting patches already, i've only had the keyboard three day lol and there are so many more banks to experiment with
Hi,
prog banks from I-a to I-f and G, but also U-a to U-f are considered as factory presets (which are basis for factory combis presets but also numerous third-party collections of Combis like K-Lab or SoP Enne...)= you'd better not remove any of those if you want to test your combi presets...
Banks U-g and "Uaa to Ugg" are real user banks= but remember that many third party collections are made of progs and combis... and if you want to play those combis, progs must be located in specifical places...
There's also another problem= you can't store different types of progs in the same bank...
So, it's really a real brain storm managing to run all progs/combis together and that also means it's pretty hard to get slots enough for all existing inspiring progs...
I'm coming from a PC based DAW system (reason and Ableton live) so this is all new for me lol. On the pc I just save all of my patch creations without any limitations. Am I correct in assuming though that program storage is not particularly memory/storage taxing as they are just edits of existing sounds and the file sizes are very small and efficient ? Wouldn't creating extra user banks be easy to implement.
The combi issue I am avoiding for now lol, as I have no space for programs I can't face trying to load third party combis and wrecking what I already have. I did grab the JMJ combis which put some programs in one of my user program banks.
I had planned on buying a few of the exs korg extra librarys but will hold off now as I have no where to put them lol

First of all KRONOS is not a DAW or computer. There are somethings you can't do on KRONOS that could to on comptuer, and somethings you can do on KRONOS that you can't on computer.
On KRONOS there is no limit actually for number of programs. You can save as many PCG files as you want. Each PCG file can have 1000s of programs. You can load one PCG file at a time, but you can audition programs from any PCG file on the SSD without loadin the PCG file.
You can make a PCG for the sounds you like.
It's basically similar to what you do on a DAW. You will have to load banks or programs into VST by browsing your computer where you saved. So after you download PCG files and copy to the SSD on KRONOS, don't load the PCG, just OPEN it, you can audition the sounds from the PCG, and this is what you can't do on a computer. After you download the sounds, you have to be in a DAW and need that VST or instrument added to a track to audition the sound. On KRONOS, you simply open the PCG, bank, and go through the programs. Then load 'only' the ones you like.
Roland Fantom-G6 ARX1, Korg M3-m exb-Radias, Korg Z1-18v, Roland MC-808, Roland MC-909, Korg microKontrol.
Thanks. didn't know that, saved a couple of new banks to the ssd and auditioned them, works a treat. I can just cherry pick favourites now and exercise some self control lol
I definitely understand! I filled all of my user banks and combi banks in a matter of a week. My combis are not all matching the programs that they need because I meticulously organize all of my programs where they fit rather than where they think they should go, otherwise like 3 or 4 different programs would all write over each other. Anyway some of the innacurate combis are very unique and different based on the fact that they use the wrong programs and in many cases it offers me a combi I like. I have no idea what they are supposed to sound like but after spending almost $1000 on aftermarket expansions and soundsets and combis, there is no way I'm only loading 1 or 2 at a time. To me this is an egregious f up by korg, that you can't just load it up and everything just works but hey, the Kronos is unmatched in how Amazing it is so I work around it just like the lack of a key transpose button or shortcut so I bought a Roland XP-80 to use as the controller. You will fall in love with your Kronos because nothing on the planet is even half as Amazing as it overall. Enjoy and lets keep our fingers crossed that a software update will add more user preset location again in the future as well as the option for all sounds to sample from the SSD rather than loading into the Ram and the ability to use that 4th GIG of RAM that is available via the slot in the motherboard.

You have to remember that on a PC/DAW when you're dealing with sample-based material you're always loading in from disk. For example if you bring up the Ivory plugin, it doesn't make a sound. You load in the Steinway grand and you can play it. Want to hear the Bose, you have to load it. Go back to the Steinway and it needs to be loaded again. While all this doesn't take great deal of time it's far from instant. With the Kronos you can jump instantly between thousands of sounds all ready to play with FXs loaded. Combis are another layer of complexity that is difficult to implement in a PC/DAW.

yes, when the kronos was released it looked like a lot of free space with the extra slots we got (U-AA-UGG), but there are a lot of soundsets available right now so we are having luxery problems of using all those sounds.
I just load the sets i want when i want to use them in the kronos. It's simply not possible to have all the sets in one kronos at the same time. So i made load files for specific types of music, like ambient, dance, pop, etc... Then whenever i do a project in that specific style i just have to load that complete set and the kronos has changed in a workstation for that style.
But for live purposes this is obviously not a great method. But you can mix and match several soundsets for that purpose with pcgtools so that you can have your favorite sounds and combis available for live.
even with re-arranging slots I have storage problems, especially for Programs, given all the nice soundsets made available and creating my own.
Indeed, as Qui mentioned, an additional U-AAA to U-GGG bank for Programs would come in handy. Dan and colleagues at Korg: for a next software upgrade??

it's not really hoarding in my opinion. The main issue is the usage of programs in combis. For instance, my combi collection that i'm working on now relies for most sounds on my own custom sounds. Now i need a program bank to make my combis work. I've choosen program ban bank U-DD if i recall correctly. Now if you need bank u-dd for an other combi bank from a different developer or your own combis then one of those combi banks won't work.
Kronos users can get quite a lot of program banks already available at the moment (for sale and free). Now in the next months there probably will be more and more combis available from several resources. In that case it get's tricky, because you have to choose which combi banks will work or not (based on your own program library setups).
So the more space you have for storing programs the better it is when you look at it that way
