Korg/3rd Party apps won't interact with X50

Post by eslice »

Spent two evenings trying to solve this problem. Hoping someone here can give me a tip.

I'm trying to get my just-purchased (used) Korg X-50 to interact with my DAW (Reason 5) and the KORG utilities via straight USB connection.

My PC is running Win7 SP1 64bit. I've downloaded and installed the latest X50 drivers, the USB-MIDI driver, the KORG System Updater and the KORG X50 Editor. All installations go smoothly - no errors reported. I've uninstalled and reinstalled each driver and utility several times now.

Windows 7 happily shows the X50 is connected via USB. The X50 appears as a device under "Sound, video and game controllers". Details for the device show the driver is signed by Korg with version 1.14.6.3 (dated 1/8/2013).

The KORG USB-MIDI utility also seems to shows the X50 is connected. I have to click "Device List..." and the X50 is the only device listed. I have MIDI IN set to "Both". Not sure whether this app needs to stay open, so I've generally left it open just in case, but have tried it both ways many times.

Here is where I hit the proverbial wall...
  • -- Tried running Korg X50 Update 1.05 - it says "Found no MIDI port"
-- Tried running Korg X50 Editor - choosing "Utility->Receive All" it says "Receive All Error"
-- My DAW (Reason 5) will not auto-detect the X50 nor will it receive signals if I select "Generic Keyboard". It also cannot detect the X50 via MIDI signals (pressing keys on X50 while it's watching). Reason also shows no available MIDI ports/devices to interact with.
Something is clearly wrong. Any ideas from you X50 veterans??

Run the "Uninstall KORG USB-MIDI Device" program. Remove any midi drivers that you aren't using or that aren't working. You'll need to check the checkbox that lets you remove non-korg drivers. Run the Install KORG USB-MIDI Device. Ensure that the device was installed in midi0-midi9. You can check that by running the Uninstall Device program again to see which midi port it's using. Then try the other stuff again.
