I have an XW-P1 and it does have patch remain in the PERFORM mode.

Looks nice in gold, btw: :D

That XW-P1 does look nice. If ROMplers are apples and VA's are oranges, the XW-P1 is a pineapple and the XW-G1 is a kiwi fruit. It's not purely a ROMpler. The VA synthesis is monophonic. And then it has drawbar organ mode. So it's not directly comparable to polyphonic VA synths. It is a damn interesting synth. I came very close to buying one when it came out, but I need VA synth pads too much and I don't need a mono synth. Most of all, I was glad to see Casio get back into any kind of synthesis, so many years after abandoning synths for ROMplers and digital pianos. I did notice there's even some CZ heritage in the synth section. But since it doesn't have full featured VA synthesis directly comparable to the R3 (or even the classic MicroKorg), then I don't see how the XW is relevant.

If you start playing a tone in performance 001, hold the notes, then switch to performance 002, do the notes get cutoff or continue playing? What if the tone is a mono synth tone, or is that possible in performance mode? If you're talking about merely hitting the tone button while playing notes, that's not patch remain: it's switching to a different timbre/tone that's loaded in the performance.

It just depends on what you are looking for.

You can hold down notes with your left hand, change the patch to the next one, and whatever you were playing with the left hand "remains." You can then play the new patch with your right hand.

I don't think it works that way in the other modes--need to double check.

Very true. I was referring to the XW relevance to Korg synths with patch remain. It's very relevant when looking at options for buying synths in general. It's a very interesting hybrid synth, rompler and organ combo. It wouldn't be a very good substitute for a polyphonic VA synth, but it seems like it would be great for someone who wanted to add a bit of lead/bass synth parts to a wide range of rompler sounds, with a drawbar organ as a bonus.

That's why I bought one! Whole lotta bang for the buck, and... the gold limited edition version might just be worth a million dollars someday.

Korg should consider the XW-P1 to be like a warning shot across the bow that Casio is going to be a serious contender in the synth market. The XW is a great first step back into synths, and it wouldn't take much more for them to knock Korg completely out of the ring. Let's say that Casio expands the XW synth voices to be able to do 8-32 polyphony with 2-4 timbres. They could completely kill Korg VA synth sales if they added aftertouch and a high quality keybed in the $599-$999 range to kill the KingKorg, along with a vocoder 8 poly synth in the $299-$399 range to kill the MicroKorg, MKXL+, and R3.
