Kronos: AL-1 Dance Experience Combi Demo QR

Post by QuiRobinez »

This is a live jam with the Dance Experience QR Combi

There is a lot of talk lately about the AL-1 on this forum, now since i have a lot of sounds created for this al-1 i though it was a good idea to show you a sneak preview of one of the premium sets i'm working on which is based on the AL-1 engine. This combi uses only synth sounds from my new Dance Experience sound set i'm working on

Now since the AL-1 is a great Virtual analog synth i could create every dance sound i had in mind in this engine. Every synth sound you hear in this combi is from the AL-1 engine. I've made them really loud to create that dance sound, everything you hear is recorded live from the Kronos except for the Sound Effects which were added in this video to build up the song. I've programmed the arpeggiators with the KARMA modules in the Kronos which i'm using in this combi.

What i find very impressive of the AL-1 engine is that the sounds i'm using in this combi are using only one AL-1 Engine each, This has a positive effect on the cpu power needed in these kind of combis, for instance this combi never exceeds the 45% cpu power, which leaves a lot of extra sound power available depite the wall of sound it already produces :)

Some extra info about the Dance Experience sound set:
In the dance sound set there are a lot of modern dance sounds which can be used for lots of different styles. This combi is just one example to show a couple of those sounds. It will be a premium set which has 64 programs, a couple of combis (not determined yet how many) and custom Dance KARMA GE's.

Here's the combi demo

I'm really interested in your opinions about this set!

Infectious music.

You have obviously programmed some great Karma stuff with these programs.

Ever heard of System 7? Steve Hillage / Giraudy

Good programming as always, Qui! I look forward to hearing more of the completed set. As for feedback, the one thing that jumped out at me that I hadn't expected from your description was that the sounds seem kind of late nineties/early naughties to me.
It could just be just this specific demo, or even the kind of music we use for reference - e.g., Armin van Buuren, certainly not the least of DJs, still does stuff like this too. But I suppose I was expecting more Calvin Harris/David Guetta/Avicii/Will.I.Am kind of stuff. I suppose that could be considered more pop dance, again, it just was something different from what I had expected from your previous announcement.

good point,

those sounds are in the set, but the combis for that style aren't ready yet, I had a couple of trance like combis ready, so that are the trance sounds that you hear. The other sounds will be in a demo when the release is nearby :)

Really nice stuff and very well programmed !!

In round about 3:45 an hihg pitched arp starts (karama button 6 or 7 ).
I would like to hear a more sid-like or tb303 acid-like arp that i smore dry.
But this is just my two cents ;)

You're really the crazy king in Kronos programming.

Amazing combi Qui!! Just listening to your jamming makes it perfect to recreate tunes like "For an angel" of PvD.

I actually can't believe it's just 1 engine playing! I bet there's a lot of karma programming there but overall I loved it. Never thought it would sound so darn good! :D

@SanderXpander: i think the ones you mentioned are more into dance pop music, while the style Qui is playing is more dance trance music. Either way I can't wait for the set to be available for purchase. :D

Hi
Very good sounding demo. AL – is a great synth engine – and what is important it is not that overloading the processor. So really great stuff, I wait for moru such nice demos :)

I think you did a great job DJ Qui, even though I am more of a Rock guy I still wanted to order a few over priced drinks at the bar only to get rejected by a few girls just looking for a "girls night out" with their friends..... Oh the days of clubbing for women. Ooops did I reveal too much??
All kidding aside damn those drinks were expensive, I mean it sounds really good Qui.

I have finished a new combi based on the scream & shout track from Will I Am and Britney for my new sound set, it turned out really good I think, especially when I added the acappella from the song to it to test the combi live.

This combi will also be added to the dance experience sound set, I'm still thinking of putting a youtube demo online, but youtube probably will tag it with a copyright infringement, since it sounds like the original. So i'm not sure if i'm going to upload such a demo.

well, it's really true, the only synth sounds you hear are 4 AL-1 programs from the set.

The KARMA programming was quite difficult, i used some tricks which are actually good tips for anyone. First of all the KARMA programming for this track only used Factory KARMA GEs, so for this i didn't need any custom KARMA GEs. Now the hard part was to achieve all those patterns with just the four KARMA GEs. I've set it up the following way:
Module 1: the Trance chord pattern
Module 2: The Bass line pattern
Module 3: the Arp pattern at the end of the song
Module 4: The drum pattern

Now to achieve the result i've combined Module 1 and 2 for the three timbres that you hear till the arp starts at the end of the song. The bass line patterns also plays the lower parts of one of the modules where the other timbre plays the higher parts of the same pattern. As an extra, later in te song the supersaw preset only plays the higher parts on top of the other timbre which plays everything from that module.

By using two karma modules i could get that fast sound in one of the timbres in the lower area (on top of the bass) where everything from the C2 and upwards was played by the chord pattern. That gives a lot of extra possibilities for the same timbre, since you can change scenes for the different areas of the keyboard.

So practically everything you hear is done by 2 KARMA modules, so that i have a third module available for the drums and the fourth module for arp patterns if needed.

To be honest I thought you probably used custom KARMA GEs, knowing you've done that in the past. It's good to know that things like the one you showed us can be done using preset KARMA GEs, even when it took a lot of time to program them to sound the way you wanted it for this demo.

Right now I'm on a beginner level when it comes to AL-1 engine, still lots of pages to read and I thank you all the tips you always share with us. :)

You can do a lot with the Factory KARMA GEs when you reprogram them on the kronos. For my combi set i used a lot of custom GEs but for this demo that wasn't needed, i could easely found the patterns in the factory GEs.

Also my WillIAm - scream & shout combi was created with factory GEs, you can recreate that song with just the factory GEs.

The basics for reprogramming KARMA GEs are explained in my KARMA tutorial 2.
