combining the Korg ims-20 with other apps

Post by panpanbamboo »

Hi,
What I understand is that I can not import any sounds into the sound bank of the Korg ims-20. So in order to have a wider variety of sounds I am wondering if I can use the ims-20 with other apps such as the i electribe, Animoog, Arctic Keys.
And if it's possible where can I find the tutorials for this?
Is there an ipad app which allows you to export sounds of the ims-20, i-electribe, Animoog, Arctic Keys and mix them altogether again?

Thanks,
Pan

Actually, you can import sounds into the sound bank of the iMS-20. You do this by loading a Session from SoundCloud. A session contains the synth sounds that it uses for each pattern. When the session has a sound that you like, you can press the save button under the Sound Preset section to save it to the sound bank. You can then load that sound preset at any time.

You can't export and import sounds (synth patches/programs) between iMS-20 and any other synth, but this is normal for synths. Synths aren't patch/program compatible with each other unless they have specifically been designed to be so, and most aren't. You can record, sample or mix the audio output of different synths, so long as you know how to connect the audio to do this. So yeah, you can mix music played by ims-20, with some music apps all together on the iPad. This done on the iPad with AudioBus, and AudioBus compatible apps.

Yup I find audiobus extremely easy to use and record Magellan, the ims-20, the Arturia imin, and several drum program into garage band or loopy HD all of the time. audiobus really brings your apps together nicely .
Yes I spend an hour or so a week auditioning new drum patterns for the ims20's pattern editor an then use them with audibus as well for rhythm patterns.

importing and saving

Post by panpanbamboo »

Hi,
First of all thanks for the answers. I checked out the import suggestion and you seem to know what you are doing. Importing a song/track from a Soundcloud user by downloading the track and opening the session and listening for the right pattern to find the appreciated sound, it generated a new question.
I found the appreciated sound in pattern 13. The Korg ims-20 showed it concerned a lead 4 in the sound preset display. This means that Korg ims-20 is able to recognize the blue print of the sound and compare it with its own existing sound presets.
My question: How do I find out upfront if it really concerns a new sound that is not part of the Korg ims-20 sound bank?

Hi Pan,

You're welcome. All of the program/patch sounds are unique copies contained in a pattern of a session. The session doesn't automatically use or load program/sounds by name from the sound bank - the sounds are stored in the session, not loaded from the bank, so if a session has a patch for synth1 that happens to be the same as one stored as "lead4", it doesn't have any relationship to it. The sound bank is like a holding spot for you to load and save sounds separate from the session. Only you move sounds into it or out of it by hitting the save or browse buttons. In other words, the session is self-contained with everything it needs to play, without any external dependencies on the sounds loaded into the sound bank. You can save the sounds from any session into the bank, giving them whatever name you wish, although the name of the sound will default to whatever the created named it to be. The sounds have description fields for the author and keywords, so that you can categorize them or see the creators name.
