Purchase Advise -- M50 Vs. MOX

If you could find a second hand M3 with the Radias board you'd have the best of both and more. Probably still more expensive than an M50 though.

Believe me...I HAVE been looking -- that was my first choice but still way out of my reach at the moment.

Don't want to wait too much longer as I have some musical ideas in my head just bursting to get out.

Just need something that'll give me something to work with and the M50-73 looks like it'll fit the bill (for now).

Ya just gotta LOVE those synth sounds on this song even though they're not Korgs...And the girls ain't all that bad either. Just wish the video quality was a bit better.

Hmmm, I'm sitting in an Internet cafe at the moment, so it's hard to hear the tune very well. Still, I'd say you can duplicate most of the sounds. Definitely hearing some interesting FM sounds in there as well... you can likely come close to those with the M50... use a combi layer.

Keep in mind the M50 has some excellent effects--make the most of them!

Okay...I've pretty much ruled out the MOX at this time.

So here I am pondering the purchase of a used M50-73 or a Krome 73.

Seems like there's little difference between the two in functionality but a price gap of about $400-500.

Positive for the Krome is I can get new, with current updates, more bells-and-whistles, store return if I don't like it(?) and factory warranty.

The M50 for less but if in good condition, should be more than adequate for my needs and better build (according to the comments on the forum here). Another thing is the freezing issue I've read about (but that seems to only affect the 61 key versions, I think).

My dilemma is that I don't live close to a music store and don't know of any Korg owners in the area so I can't try out the Krome...Same being the case with a used M50 since all I've been able to find are ones on eBay located nowhere near where I live.

So far I've seen the M50 73 in the $700-1,000 price range used and about $1,200 + for new.

My current budget is about $700-750 so even a new Krome would put me over that but if I wait a little while I might be able to scrounge up some additional cash if I sell off something.

Thoughts?

New? The M50 has been discontinued for awhile... I'm surprised there are any new ones left. If so, you should be able to talk the dealer down to $1000 for a 73-key unit.

Keep in mind the Ion (and the R3) are virtual analog synthesizers that generate raw waveforms, where the M50 is a workstation that uses pre-recorded samples for its sounds. You can achieve some great synth-type sounds with the M50, M3, Krome... etc, but it is a different piece of equipment compared to a virtual analog synth (VA).

Decision made and won a M50 73 on eBay for a little less than $700. Should have by next week, I hope. Can't wait!!

I'm sure I'm going to be using this forum a lot as I get to know the instrument. Thanks to everyone who've chipped in with their advise and experiences. Also looks like I'll have to change my instrument list soon as I also dumped the XP-80

Enjoy your M50! Another benefit of that choice is that you get the 73 keys instead of 61. To get back to some of what you said earlier, though, for some of the vintage prog kinds of tonewheel organ and VA synth sounds which may not be its strength, if you happen to have an iPad, there are some very nice and very cheap apps for these things, which you can easily control from your M50.

Yes , Galileo from Yonac software for the Ipad is simply amazing to hear and chalk full of amazingly great features. You might want to check it out here.

There are several other youtube vids showcasing this softwares superb abilities and the best part is the cost is under 10 US dollars. Not to shabby for such a small price.
