Case for Kronos 61

Post by scales »

Just purchased a Kronos 61 (old soul) clearance price at GC for first generation Kronos. This thing is so sick it's ridiculous. Bought a Yamaha CP-4 and Kronos 61. I'm in heaven. Sold my trusty old Yamaha XS-8. Do I miss it? Yes, but not much compared to the CP & Kronos. Couple of questions: can you purchase extra Combis for the Kronos in order to fill in some of the banks. And, what "soft case" would you recommend?

Custom made Case for Kronos $200 + free shipping

Post by John Hendry »

I would avoid a soft case. I had 2 and they both can damage the keys & controller knobs...how and why I got one of them (soft case) with an M1 that had... damaged keys. I was told it started slowly but after 2 years the keys in the middle were sticking. I fixed it but got rid of the soft case. Even with stiff foam it flexed enough that side pressure got put on the keys when carried or stored.

When I got my Kronos there was no hard case in any of the GCs that had one that fit. Be careful with the Kronos as it's much thicker than most keyboards. The only case that fit's TMK is Korg's case for it: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/chuy ... tem/54801/ which I haven't seen in person but after measuring I decided better to custom order one made deeper than Korg's which is only a simi-hard case, not a true hard case. No pressure or contact should be made with the keys or controls in any storage position. Just ask any good tech that works on them. Seen (and was offered) cases that bend the sliders and knobs to the side when you reverse which side is placed up.

Cases seldom rest nice and flat as when you put the keyboard in them and any movement inside should not be restricted by pressure on the controls! ERRR! Sides should be tight but must allow for movement in normal handling. When the foam compresses the keyboard is moving inside and a knob stuck in the foam will prevent it.

Be careful with "free case" offers as they must be designed for the Kronos. Because of the Kronos being so thick its not an easy brick to find a case for that fits it properly so I would imagine the problem might be even worse trying to find a soft case that fits. The Kraft PERFORMER PAK looks just like the soft case (without wheels) that damaged the M1 BTW. Here's free shipping with a custom made case for the Kronos made to your specs for $200. If you get one let us know how you like it and what dimensions you ordered. You'll need some foam but that's easy enough to come up with. Other companies are making custom cases out there too so going custom for the Kronos seems the way to go. Surprised no one has commented on resolving the Kronos case issue yet.

Good luck....

if you dont want a custom case (for such an expensive board I would) you can also check the dimensions of the kronos on the spec sheet and look for a case with that in mind.

I got a gator for my king korg, really sturdy case thus far

I got one of the Korg cases for my Kronos 61 when I purchased mine. It fits very snug and I'm happy with it personally. YMMV.

my old SKB ATA "coffin" case fits my K88 great with the foam inserts. I can practically jump on it without worrying about damage.

Go to a serious music store or order a real road case from a real road case builder. Anything else is going to fail you at the worst possible time. I can say this from experience. I have been a touring musician and now I work for a company that builds real cases. Clydesdale Custom Cases. We're up in Ontario Canada but we ship world wide and our cases our used by pros all over the world. Myself, I'd find a good case builder who is local. We're not cheap but we just might be the best. It all depends on your budget but when it gets down to the nitty gritty. Soft cases don't really cut it.
Just sayin'.

The kind of case you need really depends on how often you move your equipment, how big your vehicle is, and how careful you (or the roadies?) are...if you're on the road 10 months of the year with a rock band you need the real road case that jeremykeys is talking about, if you're a weekend warrior who plays 2 or three gigs a month and the occasional rehearsal, and loads his own gear and is careful, a gig bag will do...I'm in the second category (with a Honda Civic hatchback) and have been using Kaces and Musician's Gear gig bags with both a KRONOS 61 and 73 for a couple of years with no problems...

Thanks guys, what a huge help and great experienced insight. I am a "weekend warrior" so to speak. The Kronos will go in the back seat of my Toyota Tundra on top of the CP-4 (which is in a hard case). Yes, it is a precious machine (the Kronos) and I would hate to see it damaged in any way. I still have my Triton EX. Been saving a long time for the Kronos. Unbelievable board! I wrestled for a while deciding between the "old soul" Kronos and the X. I just couldn't fit the X into the budget. I'm very happy with my decision.

Install a 1MB DRAM module, another SSD, and a NoiseBlocker fan, and you've got a quiet X for another $75 or so (installation not included, but it's pretty easy to do it yourself - you'll find instructions on this forum from people who've done it)...

Thanks for the tip. Right now I would love to purchase some drum loops and combis for the user banks.
