Hung notes problem, HELP!!...

Post by bluestaff »

Hello! I am extremely frustrated from my Kronos, the reason being that during live performances, I get hung notes randomly and without any reasonable explanation. This happens regardless of mode, and it happens regardless if a sustain pedal is connected or not. I had it checked by the authorized service center here in Greece twice. The first time, they found nothing and just did a format and reinstall of the OS. The problem appeared again soon after. I then had them replace the damper jack, as I thought that would be the source of the problem. Indeed, from the time of the jack replacement, which was over 2 months ago, up until yesterday, no hung notes appeared. Yesterday though, in the middle of the gig, which is a weekly steady one with the same songs and everything and nothing like that had happened before, hung notes started appearing, and of course I couldn't play!! I need your help as I have whatsoever no trust on the service center here. Since it's not a hardware problem (I've changed many sustain pedals time and again and Kronos' jack), I'm guessing it's a MIDI one. How can I track it down, as it appears randomly, and what can I do to solve it once and for all?? I'm in desperate need to solve this until next Saturday (the next gig) so all help is welcome!

Thank you!

Sorry you're having problems. When you say it may be a MIDI problem, do you have it MIDI'd to something? You might describe your setup.

Nope, no midi connection whatsoever, just the kronos and a sustain pedal. My sounds are combis with multiple splits and layers, but no karma, arpeggiators, songs, patterns, etc... Nothing too fancy here, and that's what frustrates me the most! It's not like I'm straining the thing...

My Kronos has done the same thing at gigs...random hung notes which I sometimes only notice between songs. Re-boot is only solution. Good thing to have a 2nd board so band can continue but this is not ideal obviously. I figure it's a MIDI thing with my M50 and I was going to start my own thread about this

I have a similar problem with a K61. The G key above middle C seems to be slow on note release, especially on organ programs where there is no natural decay. I sent it to Sweetwater and they could not find anything wrong, so they cleaned the contacts. I got it back Friday and its doing the same thing. But it does not happen when playing the same program on my PX-5S.

Therefore I believe this is a keybed characteristic. The travel distance for note on is longer than for note off, about 1/16". So the position of the key for note on is different than note off. This results in the seemingly hung notes because the note off point is higher than the note on point.

I got the K61 for the specific purpose of having an more "organ-like" keybed to play organ on. I generally use a weighted keybed for everything else.

If the keyboard is the problem then the "problem" would be seen in the MIDI out. One could test that with a second keyboard.

Reboot did nothing, I tried that during the break. Also, I don't think it is a keybed issue, as it's not some specific notes that hang, once a note starts hanging, all follow... I will try hooking up a second keyboard (an electro 4d) and see what happens. If the problem persists, what next??

Did some midi monitoring through midi-ox and it's confirmed that the keyboard sends random sustain messages, but not all the time, just when it feels like!... The timing of these messages are completely random. It could be every 1 minute or so, and then it could take many more minutes to reappear or they don't reappear at all!!... I hooked up the damper to the footswitch jack, set the footswitch to control karma slider 1, set karma slider to transmit cc64 messages and the problem appears to have gone, but then again, it may as well reappear, I can't tell... I'm seriously consider selling it though, as I'm extremely frustrated and can't do my job!!...

Try setting the pedal input to some other CC and monitor for that CC. If it appears, then there is a problem with the input jack or its circuit.

Check your Global mode setting for Damper/Sustain is set to “KORG” by default and not reversed polarity.

In the past this posed a problem for Triton Studio users who used Non Korg pedals, or who didn't use any but had the polarity reversed regardless.

Its a shot in the dark but worth a look.

Regards
Sharp.

Don't know if this is related, but I have seemingly random issues with stuck notes when using M Audio sustain pedals on my Kronos, but not any other pedals that I own. In that case though, if notes stick, I can step on the pedal a few times and they stop. I've got 2 M audio sustain pedals and they both do it on the Kronos, but not on other keyboards, and no other sustain pedals I own do it on the Kronos.

It's not a polarity or pedal issue. I have the Korg damper pedal and the polarity is correctly set. LZ, when I step on the pedal the notes stop but after a while they start hanging again... I don't know what else to do...

There have been a few Kronos's that have this issue. Mine did. At first I thought it was the sustain pedal so I bought another. It wasn't the pedal. Then I went on Google with the search 'Kronos sustain' and found quite a few links reporting this issue with Kronos. I updated my OS in the Kronos to 2.06 from 1.04 and I haven't really had the issue since although one note did stick, but that was only once. Try updating the OS and see if that helps....?

I am wondering if this issue is RANDOM and it happens on some Kronos /x?

Is it a hardware issue? or Is it a software issue?

Is it possible to debug the HUNG notes?

I think this points to a question that has not been asked, what version of the OS do you have?
