Editors for the three Volca's (with add-on features)

Post by june74 »

Hi

I am an independent developer and I have just released the J74 Volca Control package which provides editors and control surfaces for the Korg Volca series: the VKeys, VBass and VBeats.
These tools allow you to control, store and modulate all Volca native MIDI parameters while adding a bunch of new features for synthesis and performance, such as:

- VKeys: Delay Modulation / Chorus-like effects
- VKeys: KeyTracking on VCF Cutoff
- VKeys: Additional LFO (LFO2) which is software-based and tempo synchronized (with sine, saw, square and random waves)
- VBass: OSC Pitch Tuning modes (unison, octave, third, fourth, fifth, major-chord, minor-chord and three auto-detune options)
- VBass: 3x note Polyphony emulation (paraphony), as OSC Pitch Tuning mode "poly"
- VBass: KeyTracking on EG/Cutoff level
- VBeats: MIDI velocity dynamics (emulates MIDI velocity support)
- VBeats: MIDI controllable pads with velocity emulation
- VBeats: Solo/Mute mixing controls
- All devices: X/Y Panel for modulation of two parameters simultaneously
- All devices: Parameter Randomizer
- All devices: Presets storage (load, save, recall)

The devices come in the format of Standalone desktop applications for Mac and PC (integrating via MIDI to DAWs and controllers) and in Ableton's Live / Max for Live format (integrating directly in Ableton Live, in this case a Max for Live license is required).

Wow! This looks awesome, Fabrizio! :-D
Any plans of making an iPad app of these editors?

Ok :-) I think there would be a market for an iPad app, as many probably will use the Volca's away from the studio. An iPad app would fit perfectly in such a scenario. Anyways, great initiative, I'll pick these up as soon as I get hold of the Volca's

Claves is supported: MIDI velocity, part volume, pcm speed, solo/mute. In the picture you can see the Claves settings column releated to such settings.

PS: I suppose your question comes from seeing the 3x3 pad matrix for mapping/triggering which does not (directly) show the Claves. Indeed the Claves can be mapped to the top/right pad (pad9) instead of the Agogo, and to to do that you need to set the "pad9" toggle switch (in the Claves column) ON: this switches pad9 between Agogo and Claves as a trigger for pad9. All other pad's are with fixed mapping.

If you have more questions on how the three editors operate, I suggest to have a look to the FAQ:

(indeed, question [18] addresses your same point)

And/or to the user manuals:

Update.
I've just had a very positive conversation with the developer of this application regarding the concept of the rules and him becoming a valued member of the forum like our other third party developers before been given the freedom to advertise.

So I'm very happy and I will unlock this thread. We look forward to seeing him hanging out on the forum helping his fellow KORG end users.

Regards
Sharp.

Will there be any possibility of a Linux compatible version of this?

No, unfortunately. No plans (and possibilities) for Linux at the moment.

Congratulations!

A question... how keytracking on the Volca Keys filter was done?

Hi juno6 (nice name by the way.... I have one of those...)

This is done via MIDI, if MIDI goes through the VKeys of course. The VKeys software follows the note pitch received in input and in real time modifies the Cutoff of the Volca Keys via MIDI accordingly (sending each time a new MIDI value to the unit, in a coordinated way quickly first a MIDI CC, then the note).

How it works in an example. Let's say you set on the VKeys the Cutoff = 64 and KeyTracking = 1. Each time a new MIDI note is sent, the Cutoff is re-calculated with the appropriate modulation and a MIDI update for the Cutoff is automatically sent (preceeding the MIDI note). KeyTracking uses a reference note of C3: so notes lower than C3 will lower the cutoff, notes higher than C3 will increase it (unless you invert polarity on the GUI). If start with a C1 (a low note) the Cutoff value is sent via MIDI to about 64-24=40. Then if you send a C2 a new Cutoff is sent with value 64-12=56, if you send C3 (the reference note) you will have Cutoff 64-0=64 and if you send a C4 you will get Cutoff 64+12=76.

More insights on how things work for the Vkeys, VBass and VBeats on this FAQ:

Thanx for your answer Fabrizio!

So you cleverly manipulated CC data to simulate keytracking. I thought about that, but I wondered if maybe there was some secret internal parameter that could be controlled by sysex or CC for that purpose.

You editors look great!!!

Cheers!
