Korg M50 with Garage Band on Ipad mini

Post by Run »

Hi, how would it be possible to play the included instruments (that are pretty good by the way) in "Garage Band" on IPAD Mini using the USB on the M50 or the midi out. Is this possible and if so what cables should I buy?

Thanks.

Yes you can control the Ipad from the M50. All you need is a type B USB cable to go out of the M50 and the Apple camera connection kit . I think the kit can be had for about 30 bucks. You can get the Type B USB for about 5 bucks also.

I have been using the M50 to control Thor, Sunrizer, Magellan, Animoog, Sampletank, Nave, ISEM, ect. . Any app that is midi compliant works with the M50 and the knobs can be set to control filter cutoff, resonance, distortion, or what ever you like if the app has midi learn. Just hit midi learn on the App and then select the knob on the App then turn a knob on the M50 and it is set for use. Pitch and modulation also are programmed to work.
I just ordered a Samson Carbon 49 to use when away from my M50. There are only a couple of controls to Map but I use the controls on the App anyway. The Samson Carbon 49 can be purchased for 89 dollars and is getting Great reviews.

The iPad Mini has a Lightning connector, not USB. You will need a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. Life is not easy or cheap with Apple. There is a different connector for everything and the camera adapter is used for many midi interfaces.

That is why I said you will need a camera connection kit to hook to the Ipad and get the kit for lightning because you are using the Ipad mini like myself. So like the Eagle stated, get the camera connection kit for lightning.

Before spending money on the camera connection adapter you should also consider if you want to use the iPad for audio in/out at the same time. Once you have connected something to the single lightning port that's it.

You could use the headphone port for output but you won't have input. I use a Griffin Studio Connect with Lightning. It has MIDI DIN in/out as well as audio in/out.

How do you like the studio connect Eagle? I almost bought one but then heard about the studio connect that will be coming out with two preamps for condenser recording. I am waiting on that to come out this spring or I have also being eyeing Rolands duo capture witch is very similar. The lack of inputs on the studio connect is really what kept me from purchasing. I can get a lightning studio connect for 90 dollars and it is tempting at that price. I suppose I could run the mics through my boss br-1180 and then into the studio connect but that would kind of negate the whole portability aspect. Have you worked out a different way to run mics through it?

I really like the Studio Connect. It works well and it does what I need for now which is MIDI in/out plus audio out. I don't do much where I need to bring audio in so the audio input they have doesn't bother me too much. Any time I need audio input I route it through my MOTU 896.

Although I don't use the audio in much right now I may in the future as I find more and more uses for the iPad. If the upcoming Studio Connect HD had been available now I would have bought it for the improved I/O but I needed something now.

I may get the new one when it's available and keep it in my backpack for portability and leave my other one connected in the studio for convenience. The addition of USB MIDI will be good for me since I carry a CME Xkey in my backpack which is also USB.

The Roland looks good too but i would choose the Studio Connect HD. It costs less, doesn't require the camera connect kit, has USB MIDI, and has a place to dock the iPad.

I received the camera connection kit today and everything works fine with the M50 if I enable USB in global parameters...
The acoustic guitar and strings are so nice in this app.
Thanks for the advice.
