Backing track with separate outputs

Post by andreamusic »

Hi guys,

in live performance with my band I need to use backing tracks.

The backing track is including the song in wav format (in mono) and the click for the drummer (left channel). The click will have to be sent to the drummer only.

The idea is to load the song in the Kronos X hard disc and send the song to the Kronos separate outputs.

Is it possible and how can I do it?

Moreover, I will have to use the backing track in set list mode so when I go through the slots the backing track won't stop playing

I appreciate any help

Not only possible but quite simple.
I don't have a step-by-step for you but basically you add both waves as audio events in a new sequencer song, and on the IFX routing page you can set them to go to any output, pre or post any fx you might like to put on them.

In order to not have the backing track stop playing, you will have to put multiple instances of the same song in the setlist. You can then spwcify the "active track" for each slot, so in other words you will have to prepare all your sounds on tracks within the same song.

Songs are lost if not saved to disk, so remember to save any edits before powering down. Also, unfortunately, they don't autoload, so you will have to load them after booting the Kronos normally. The setlist does find them automatically after they're loaded. Also, although you can run out of sequencer memory if you have many songs, you can save a bunch of songs into one SNG file to save you loading time. Judging from what I've heard on here, people ran out of sequencer memory somewhere between 30 and 50 simultaneously loaded songs. So maybe make batches of 25 or even less to be on the safe side. They will load pretty quickly.

Hi there,
thanks for the hints.
I've copied my backing track in mp3 format in Kronos X hard disc.
I'm not familiar with SEQ mode, how can I add my mp3 file in the New Song?
Thanks!

you can't use MP3's on a kronos, convert your mp3 to wav and copy it to the SSD. Then follow the guide below:

Hi Qui,
thanks for your tutorial.
I have 2 issues:

1) I've created my backing track in SEQ mode.
In order to use it in SET LIST mode (I'm using 20 slots with combis and programs) do I need to set each slot in song mode? every slot has a different sound.

2) Can I assign the backing track volume to a slider in set list mode? That is helpful when during the sound check I need to adjust the backing track volume in real time according to other instruments volume

Thanks a lot

You can't switch through any random amount of combis and/or programs while your backing track is running. The backing track is basically a sequencer song playing, so you will need to stay in sequencer mode to keep playing the song. What you can do is put the different sounds on different tracks and midi channels, then add the sequence to the setlist in multiple slots (as many as you need different sounds) and set the "active track" on the setlist edit page for each slot. This will let you switch sounds/tracks within the same sequence while it is running.

As for a volume fader, you can use the control surface to set the volume of any track, including your audio backing track.

If I need for example 10 slots of the setlist within the same backing track running I was thinking to create first 10 sequences (in seq mode) and in each sequence importing the combi or the program I need
Is that what you mean? :)

No. Within ONE sequence, set up ten different tracks. This will probably mean you can't use all the combis you want to use.

If you need e.g. electric piano, hammond, piano and strings, you would set up timbre 1 on midi channel 1 and set electric piano, timbre 2 on midi channel 2 and set hammond, timbre 3 AND 4 on midi channel 3 and set one on piano and one on strings.
Now make three slots in setlist mode referring to the same sequence. On the edit page, specify tracks 1, 2 and 3 respectively as "active track" you can now switch between electric piano, hammond or piano+strings by selecting a slot, without your sequence stopping.

I'm sorry but you won't be able to just switch between a bunch of combis while your sequence is running. If you absolutely need to do this you could always play the backing track from some external device.

Thanks for the advice!

Within the same sequence can I copy 2 combis?

I've copied 1 combi (in tracks 1,2,3,4) with the "copy from combi" from the menu and I wanted to add another combi in tracks 5,6,7,8

Is it possibile?

I've never tried, sorry. You could do it timbre by timbre but I can see why that would be a drag. Let us know?
EDIT: Actually I'm pretty sure you can't, I'm afraid.
