Troubles with R3 Mod Sequencer

Post by AKorgR3User »

I was shocked that i couldn't find anyone else with this question online, however I might be overlooking something really stupid. I've had the R3 for about a week and although I can use the Formant Motion fine, I still can't understand how to properly use the Mod Sequencer. From what I understand this is how it works:
1) Make sure Vocoder is off
2) Select either Timbre 1 or Timbre 2
3) Press the On/off button so its lit (Mod sequence button)
4) Press the record button
..etc

My issue is at step number 3. When messing around with a knob before I decide to record, it sounds quite different from when i press the Mod sequence button. Even after I start recording the sound change is still evident. I assume its because of a mod sequence preset? My question is - how do I get rid of this?

It seems the preset remains during and after the mod recording and it really messes things up. I cant figure out how to get rid of this. The instruction manual doesn't say how to do this from what I can tell, and it seems like a very basic issue. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me with this issue!

Hi,

Note: I don't have an R3.

If you hit notes between step 3 and 4, the modulation sequencer starts running and modulates one of the parameters. (In case the syncing for the mod sequencer is off, it may even modulate parameters without hitting notes.) So at the moment you hit record, the sound may fall back to the preset one or stay in the current state (with one parameter changed by the mod sequencer) (I can not check this statement).

So I would like to suggest to set the modulation destination to None between steps 2 and 3. This should make sure that, when pushing the mod seq On button in step 3, none of the parameters of your current sound is modified/modulated.

Hoping this could be useful..

Ciao.

When you're in the timbre you want to have motion sequenced (timbre 1 or 2 light blinking), hit the 4th button...ideally when you're ready to tweak the knob you wanna record. As you described, at this point it will probably play a pre-recorded mod sequence unless it's a new InitProg patch; this is how you activate it. After you hit the 4th button, hit the 5th to initiate recording. See the 16 LEDs trailing around the rotary encoder? GOOD! You're ready to record. Record by hitting a key then fiddling with the parameter. It will record for 1 rotation. If you want to overwrite it, you'll have to do the same again, only when you tweak the parameter you'll have to imagine the changes, cause it'll still be playing the old motion sequence until the new one's done recording!
...
If this is too verbose, the key thing to remember is that a motion sequence is a feature of each timbre, and recording is a feature of motion sequencing. So make sure:
1) you're within a timbre,
2) you're within the motion sequence option,
3) you prep recording with the record button. Then you hold the note/tweak the knob to record it.

Remember too that not all parameters can be motion sequenced! The ones that can are mostly the core synthesis variables (with some exceptions), as opposed to stuff like FX or patch fundamentals like poly/mono select.
