I know you're a young 'un, button - been there, done that, and when you've been around this game for many years a 'closed mind' to any kind of music just doesn't exist. And on "broaden my palate", can I just inform you that I've been involved in various genres of music through the past five decades.

A very useful asset is, if you're intending to make a go of it in the music business, you have to have is a thicker skin because, as distasteful as you may be finding the remarks so far, they'll pale in comparison to some you'll undoubtedly come across from time to time.

I hope all the comments from Joe, DH56, and myself will in some way help with that acquisition. Oh, and don't dismiss too quickly my comment about agents/promoters and various music professionals spending only a minute listening to any given track. These people are bombarded with tons of stuff on a daily basis and if nothing is grabbing them in the first thirty seconds, it's outta there. Trust me on that one.

The main thing is, keep on making your music your way. As DH56 said, every generation has to have it's own defining mark, so go ahead and make yours. I sincerely wish you good luck.
When I nod my head . . . Hit it!

lol at all the people complaining about my complaining instead of staying on topic.

also I'm completely aware of "opinion", though my opinion on your opinion is obviously something you can't handle. back to the music please...

Strewth mates!!

An impertinent lot these young whippersnappers! :P

Uh, what was the topic again, before we had the audacity to have (whispers)..."opinions" on a forum?

Ah yes, music today was it? But wait...there's more here than meets the eye! Let's take a moment to break down this double entendre. For I am an inquisitive bloke to a fault and ofttimes question the meaning of words and phrases, and the way that syntax can be employed in a certain way to give double meanings.

OK, so the topic and/or question was, and I quote, "What do you feel about music today?"

Now there are two ways one can look at this. One, how do you feel about music on THIS day, which is the most logical choice since that is the way it reads. Or, did the OP mean it to imply the "music of today" meaning like for example 2010 onwards in which case it should have read "How do you feel about today's music?"

Blimey! In true Doogenator fashion, and not knowing the OP's actual intent, I promptly covered both bases and even threw in some attaboys and some encouragement and for that we get's bricked!

Loved the Kung Fu reference csteen! Anyone can attain knowledge, but wisdom has to be earned.

As for you there young button, we know you are just feeling your oats and all, being a young testosterone charged rhinocerous, but be careful, for although we are indeed a patient lot, it wouldn't take much for us in a dyslexic stupor to mix up some letters and see buffoon!

well ok from my point of view this is what I'm dealing with here. What it seems like, a bunch of OLD (you asked for that) know-it-alls that made assumptions about what is being expressed in this thread and about me. One I am not a whippersnapper and two I'm not a rhinoceros, I'm a 33 yr old female (that was having a bad week last week) thank you very much. Though I regret nothing. So yeah... excuse me when I find it hard to give anything a few of you posted any creditability. -__-

So... to reiterate (more sensically, wow just made up a word someone inform the dictionaries) what I posted much earlier, I really do find the phrase "today's music is not very good" or anything of that sort to be impossible. first you have to have listened to ALL music of this generation, to be able to express an opinion like that. It is impossible to listen to ALL music that is out there so therefore NO ONE can ever say that. it is an illogical comment. IF you by some sort of strange reality bending miracle DID listen to every piece of music then you could perhaps say something like "well I have now listened to every single song ever made within this generation up to this point and I can comfortably say that I don't feel it is as good as the music from the past". If that were the case then I'd humbly sit back down and say "oh ..ok, cool".
SO when someone says something like "so yeah I skimmed through a few youtube links, heard a few songs on the radio, saw a few songs on the TV and nah, not for me. I much prefer older music", I can't help but to scoff and refer to you as a dumbass, bit harsh sure but hey, callin it as I see it, soz. >_>

Of course no one has listened to every single song ever made. But if you listen to what's in the charts at this very moment then it gives you a feel for what is popular with today's youth. I have to admit to listening to very little current music these days and that is purely because I don't like the direction that the chart music is taking. I'm not a fan of rap or hip hop and the current R'n'B only barely resembles the genre that started 70 years ago. I'm a self confessed rock chick so the chart music is very slim pickings for me. I do still buy new albums but they're by lesser known bands who make the music they are passionate about rather than the music society has deemed "popular".

To chime in here, I was having a convo the other day that sort of reminded me of what Pepperpotty just wrote. I myself think that mainstream/chart music of yesteryear is much better than what is out here now, and so prefer that. But when it comes to underground and amateur acts - this is definitely the place and time. I don't think that music is any better or worse - its just that you have record execs, media, labels, etc. that are setting a course for music to take. But it seems like now, especially with the internet, you get so much more music, and diverse music at that, that there must surely be something for everything. Its kind of like now there are much more niches to be filled.

Music is just great, period. If you don't like something, move on, but keep listening and finding new stuff (be it old or new!)

Yes you ARE a young whippersnapper. 33? Only 33? I've got hemorrhoids older than that!

:D

Anyone can have a bad week. All is forgiven.

thanks pep, yeah this is basically a different question, a sub question. the music in the charts today. to be honest I've never really bothered with the charts, if anything I've in some ways taken them as a guide of music to avoid. I've always felt that the best music is the music you have to turn a billion rocks over to find, and then listen and re-listen a zillion times for them to sink in. which in a roundabout way expresses how I love how some music can challenge me. If it is same old same old then all there is left is personality, character to be taken by which though I'm more open minded to now than I was before it isn't always enough.
I'll never forget the first time I heard sonic youth, drunken butterfly, that animated slashing of the guitar followed by the droning slides. It was new, fresh and I wanted more. At 15 that cemented my suspicion that mainstream music was mostly utter rubbish and that if I were to find truly interesting music I'd have to search the ends of the earth for it. And I did and I still do, sure you have to wade though a lot to find the diamonds but they always pop up.

I have become quite annoyed by an older family member who has virtually zero time for new music and always goes back to the same handful of bands. to me that is just an expression of a lack of interest in music as a whole. If you truly love it then why would you give up on finding more and more. I know I will always love the bands/artists that I've known since I was young young, I will always go back to them but I know I will always want to hear more...mmoorrreeee!!!! :f

Bravo - this is the answer I will run with as well. Music is as different as there are people on this Earth. I mean, I've got opinions on what I like and dislike, but since I've been trying to learn to play a musical instrument, I've come to respect a great different styles and types out there. My musical catalog consists of everything from big hair 80's, rock ballads, love songs, piano, instrumental, soundtracks, hip-hop, country, and R&B - even new world and inspirational.

I was once I was strolling one very hot summer’s day
When I thought I would lay myself down to rest in a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
As I fell asleep, and dreamed…

I dreamed that I had listened to every song ever made
And that I had enjoyed every song ever made
This really blew my mind
To think that I had listened to every song ever made
And enjoyed every song ever made

But there I was
I was taken to a place
The hall of the music king
I stood high upon a mountain top
Naked to the world
In front of every kind of girl
There were long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones
Black ones, round ones, big ones…crazy one

Out of the middle, came a lady
She whispered in my ear something crazy
She said...don’t opine, dig that world, don’t opine, dig that world

I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back
As she disappeared, but soon she returned
In her hand was a bottle neck slide
In the other a guitar
She ran the bottle neck slide from one end to the other of the guitar
And then she raised it to her lips
And just before she blew it she said...
Don’t opine, dig that world!
Dig that world!

I think there is a lot of crap out today. I find it odd to say this because at one time I could at least appreciate the talent involved with music I didn't like but looping and remixing for the most part drives me nuts. Never the less there is some I like. Ironically there is good music out there as well I think you just have to look for it a bit harder. My recent favorites are the likes of Pentatonixs and Lindsey Stirling. So I am happy I can find music I like. I am also glad there are avenues for other music to come to light. I like some of the bedroom tunes that have come out. Still it isn't like the days of Elvis. Yea I'm a crusty old bastard also.

Hey, don't forget they also said this about electric guitar and other electronic instruments when they first came out! :)
