Windows Surface
This video highlights some excellent features of Surface
The voice control looks really useful for music apps / programs.
I'm off to buy a Surface 2 today.

I'm no fan of Apple but the iPad music apps are still much better. I bought an iPad for the sole purpose of running music apps and for that it is spectacular. For everything else it sucks.
Hopefully we'll start to see some quality music apps for the Surface soon. Of course if VST's perform well in a Windows DAW then it's already close to being there.

Sonar is now Touch optimised.
This is worth a look.

I use Sonar X3 but not with a touch screen yet. I've been meaning to look into it in more depth but haven't had the time. Does touch also work with the knobs, sliders and buttons on any vst or does the vst have to be re-programmed to be touch aware?Sharp wrote:Sonar is now Touch optimised.

I've seen that demo before and it looks great ... but ... that's a large screen. Using Sonar on a small screen like the Surface could be a limiting factor. Then again, using it as a smaller auxiliary DAW might work well. I will definitely have to look into this more now.
This is a surface pro that runs all professional music software available for windows...Bald Eagle wrote:I'm no fan of Apple but the iPad music apps are still much better. I bought an iPad for the sole purpose of running music apps and for that it is spectacular. For everything else it sucks.

I just uodated my windows8.1 setup around a 27" touchscreen, with build in hardware ( selfbuild imac idea ) , no mouse or keyboard needed however.
Works perfect with adobe...
Going to test the uodated Sonar indicated by Sharp later this week..
Yes, you can use any windows application with a touch screen right now if your running Windows 8. The OS itself gives you that ability.Bald Eagle wrote:Does touch also work with the knobs, sliders and buttons on any vst or does the vst have to be re-programmed to be touch aware?
A “Touch Optimised” application will simply give you easier control than the OS itself can because the developers will simply make things much bigger and use things like virtual buttons rather than the traditional drop down menu.

Here's a screen shot of a VST I've been developing that's fully Touch Optimised for Windows.

You touch the knobs and slide your finger up or down the screen to turn them. Touching the virtual screen on the VST brings up Bank and Sound lists you can select, or you can use the virtual dedicated buttons to switch between banks and do quick program up / down changes.
This will ultimately load massive Gigabytes of data as it streams everything. The data is divided into banks (categories) with sounds inside each bank. Only the necessary information to stream the sounds in the selected bank is loaded to RAM. This means every sound in a bank is instantly available. Switching to another bank, there's a small delay as the data is preloaded. RAM usage is very low, so switching to banks is even seriously quick on a Windows Tablet.
A 1.5 GB Bank takes about 3 second to load, and once loaded everything in that bank is available in real time. It's also open ended so there's no limit on the amount of banks and sounds it can run. The only limitation is on the storage space of the Tablet / PC it's running on. Sounds also don't cut off when you hold a chord and switch to another sound.
The type of content this will even eventually run will be everything from my KRONOS ASSAULT library to sounds I've been developing for years that people haven't even heard yet.

Sonar X3 is a great update by the way, touch or no. Especially if you take their deal to upgrade to the full Melodyne from the included Essential version.Bachus wrote:This is a surface pro that runs all professional music software available for windows...Bald Eagle wrote:I'm no fan of Apple but the iPad music apps are still much better. The new comping and Melodyne integration have made my life soooo much easier.
Re: Windows Surface
I would not buy a RT model. The Windows 8.1 is much more capable!Ksynth wrote:This video highlights some excellent features of Surface

Hello.
No purchase only the RT aplicacciones purchased or downloaded from the estore microsof work.
I have the surface 2 pro with 128gb and I also Ipad, nor compared the Surface 2 gives you 40 laps to Ipad, we 64bist windows 8.1 pro and clear table with a laptop on what that means thousands of applications without limit, when you will have this will take considerable time for the Ipad.
Caro is the Surface 2 pro depends. For me it is more expensive for what it offers Ipad.

I have the ACER Iconia W700 in the configuration as seen below.Bald Eagle wrote:Does anyone have one of the Surface alternatives like the Dell Venue, Sony Vaio Flip, Lenovo Thinkpad Helix / Twist or any others?
The Dell XPS 18 Touch is hardly a tablet at 18 inches but lots of room for a DAW.

You can use it like a Notebook when you need, and then you can take it out of it's case and use it as a Tablet when needed.

i5 Processor.
4GB RAM
128GB SSD
This puppy will come out hibernation and be on the internet in 3 second from the time you press the power button. If you use sleep, it comes on straight away.
