KORG PA-3X Rechargeable Battery Problem-again!

Post by DESERT GUY »

Has anyone had a problem with the rechargeable battery on recently new PA-3X's. I'm asking as a friend purchased a new PA-3X this past January. It came with apparently a defective battery as the standby button light was alternately flashing between green & red and the display indicated the battery was low after several hours of charging. She sent the keyboard back to the dealer, who in turned sent her another new PA-3X. The battery in the new keyboard was acting in the same manner as the first one. Korg sent her a new battery. It lasted approx. 1 1/2 months and back to the alternating flashing standby light and display showing low battery. She now has a new replacement for that battery, and it to is doing the same thing. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dale

sounds to me like the instrument is draining the battery. maybe a short of some sort. I would have the instrument checked, that's too many batteries IMO.

If both the battery and the keyboard where changed, the likely hood of the battery or the keyboard still being the cause is unlikely. Possible, but unlikely.

Do you think it could be the end users habits?

I've an older gentlemen friend here who drives me completely nuts over the battery. He will even go well out of this way to make sure he keeps the battery topped up. Turning on his keyboard for hours on end every two days guaranteed even when he has no intentions of actually playing it.

I finally convinced him to simply forget about and to treat his Pa3X the same as any other KORG he's every owned.

Thanks for the suggestions. The keyboard was checked out by a local Korg servicing company. The conclusion was the problem was pretty much created by the owner. The problem seems to be put to rest, now and all's well.

Hi Sharp

So, is there a reasonable/sensible way to "care" for the battery?
For the past 2-3 months, I have not been playing my PA3X too much - sometimes 2 weeks+ without playing it (had a lot of "drumming" band commitments!) but this is about to change back again from this week.

I have tended to leave it ON standby but this may be stupid - I am getting too many conflicting suggestions (not necessarily from this forum).
Should one let it run down?
etc..etc..

(I, seriously don't mind a few minutes start up anyhow, but am enjoying the battery luxury!!! :D )

Cheers mate

Pete :D
(PS still absolutely loving your "Vocal Assault" I bought from you a long while back - use it very often and
now on the PA3X...)

Not stupid at all !
This is the right treatment ...
I have been analyzed technical details in the past for this kind of NiMH that Pa3X is shipped with , unlike your
cellphone/smartphone/tablet lithium batteries , so they require special treatment because you have only 400 discharging circles
and partial discharging spends one of them even at 20 % level.

Therefore the right batteries maintenance is to keep always Pa3X plugged in st-by mode to save batteries life for 3-4 years
otherwise you might have to replace them after 18 moths !

Some tips :
- When Pa3X is unplugged , batteries are in dis-charging mode for 3-5 days.
- If you do not use external samples or If you intent to store device for a long period of time , it's rather wise to unplug package charged
to avoid total discharge that internal charger can't handle !
- If battery pack is in moderate condition , then Pa3X interface can't sufficiently check the real capacitance of those NiMH batteries
since the real test is very complicated and requires a processor dis-charger which is not available in Pa3X ,
so it's better to ignore tester results in that case !
- If st-by led is flashing for over than 8 hours charging period , then you have to unplug battery pack to avoid possible
overheating explosion , since that cheap NiMH pack has no logic temperature sensor !

Hope this can help
