Defiance's main theme uses a second kind of dubstep bass that I commonly hear in modern soundtracks. I tried to recreate it first on Gi, then on Kronos to no avail. Any ideas how to do that?
There is no well-defined attack. I think it extends into sub-sonic range, but there is also a kind of step-motor buzz to it, so it doesn't sound soft. Overall, it's very close to what a gigantic cellphone put on vibrate would sounds.

Indeed, the soundtrack is excellent. One of the best I've heard in the last couple years. The change of pacing, the effortless blending of symphonic instruments and dubstep-like synths, and just the overall sound-scape... It's a pity something as good as that was wasted on a rather mediocre TV show.
...
I though about that bass and I think it's something similar to granular synthesis. I'm guessing they loop a small chunk of some larger sample, or maybe even a couple of chunks in parallel.
I'm still curious if someone has better ideas, though.
