Radias Patch Diagram

Post by Mutiny in Jonestown »

Hey all,

has anyone ever designed/drawn up a patch diagram showing the modules of the Radias, controls in those modules, and input/output connections that can be achieved by the patch bay?

I know, a crazy question...but what I'm looking for is a sheet like you used to get back in the analog - pre patch memory days when you'd buy a synth. The manual would include a sheet with all the synth modules laid out in schematic fashion so you could easily write down the parameters you used to create a patch. I'm wanting to do this as a learning process because it's much easier for me to understand what I'm doing in a patch by having a visual reference.

If no one has one, I'm going to try to create my own but just trying to keep from re-inventing the wheel is possible!

Thanks!
Dennis

If anyone is interested, I just completed my Radias Patch Sheet. This is strictly a diagram of the synth engine and does not include anything about the arpeggiator or step seqencer. If anyone would like a copy (and you can't get it from this post), just pm or email me and I'll be happy to send you one. The idea is each orange circle is a modulator and the yellows are modulation targets (as defined by the virtual patch function). The connections that are already made represent the default hard wired links (ModW triggers LFO2 which alters pitch, EG1 alters Filt1 and Filt2 Cutoff, etc...) The gray circles represent knobs that can be set to a range of values. The small circles are radio buttons for selecting one of a set of choices. Anyway, here it is...

Interesting fact...I just discovered my patch sheet was based on the original OS of the manual and doesn't take into account the additional 26 virtual patch destinations included in system release 2.0!

Looks like I'm going back to the drawing board

Here's the newest update and includes the connections in the default init setting.

After finishing the basic synth patch sheet, I decided to do the same for the step sequencer. Here's what I came up with...as always, if someone would like me to email you the jpg directly, feel free to PM me.

That's pretty impressive. Thanks for your effort.

I would add that perhaps for the modwheel-pitch relationship, I would add a (somewhat invisible from the design of the system) triple multiplier or linear amp module.

Basically you get pitch bend = MW * PitchBendAmt * LFO2
(assuming the actual value of them is a -1 or 0 to 1 range floating point, which seems likely

Or another way of looking at it, the LFO2 signal is amplitude modulated by the modwheel and pitch bend amount before it goes to pitch.

Similarlfy for the LFO1 mod, technically in the way you've drawn it there should be an arrow joining it to the 'pwm' source directly.

You could also include the 6x virtual patch banks but it may be unnecessary..

You're very welcome! I learned a lot about the internal workings of the Radias synth engine by doing this. My original idea was to represent the Radias as if it was a modular synth and include a virtual input & output jack for every module and/or controllable parameter within the module.

I specifically didn't make a special "virtual patch bank" module, but for clarity included every source & destination you could set so those virtual patch connections could still be displayed even though it's not clearly obvious they were made within the virtual patch bank.

Thanks for your input, I had no idea pitch bend amount had anything to do with the ModW->LFO2 relationship, but I'll try it out...and yes, a connection from OSC1->Waveform->LFO1Mod to OSC1->Waveform->PWM makes sense...perhaps there will be a Radias Patch Sheet 2.0 though my next goal is to create a patch sheet to represent the mod sequencer

Just finished the mod sequencer map. As usual, if anyone is interested in getting their own version via email, just PM me your email addy and I'll send it along.

Sorry, I did mean the Vibrato Amount.

Although the same thing applies for Pitch Bend and Pitch Bend Amount really.

The best thing about the Virtual Patch in 2.0 is that you can modulate the Intensity (Amount) of other virtual patch slots, to create such threefold modulations as the vibrato, but with entirely custom sources (like LFO 1 to WS Depth modulated by footswitch, for example)

As for actually representing the virtual patch, I was suggesting that you simply showed 6x VP with source, dest, and intensity. Because technically you do have that intensity control, which is a kinda amplitude modulation or coefficient multiplier. Agree it could be kinda superfluous though.

You're right...the 6 virtual patch intensity amounts should have their own spot to write the value in. What I've been doing is writing the value in the "Misc Dst Src" next to the appropriate Patch#. I also noticed that I missed the connection from PBnd to the Bend value in the Pitch module...it's always the simple things that get overlooked

Sounds like I have a patch map 2.0 in my near future 8)

FYI: just finished version 2 of the patch map that includes connections for pitch bend, LFO1Mod to PWM, and the Virtual Patch bay module. For clarity sake, you can now write in the 6 virtual patch source, destination, and intensity settings along with showing them visually with drawing patch cords.

If you'd like a copy, just PM me with your email addy...I'll also send you a blank version with no patch cord connections so you can do your own drawing of everything
